I thought so too. Since they're always showing the vampires eavesdropping on conversations far away, or listening to heartbeats.

It could be doppelganger magic but they never explained why Klaus never sensed her.

And I honestly can't remember. I want to say it was after he turned off his humanity. That's why it was such a special moment. Stefan defied it all to keep Elena safe.
