Computer stops at command screen in beggining of boot up

Hey guys, I'm trying to get access to my old laptop, a Compac Preserio. I got a Dell to replace it because the screen got messed up, so is the keyboard and etc... so anyway, all of the sudden it'd stop at the boot up screen that asks for commands...

It's stuck on A:\>
There's nothing in the A drive and as far as I can remember I didn't try to fix it using any A drive disks... so I'm confused, but anyway... I'm trying to get past that, so I can save my files on the hard drive... photographs, graphics, website stuff. If anybody has any ideas that would be great and soooo helpful...

Absolutely no rush on this, since the comp. has been unuseuable for more than a year.

This is more suited to the Webmasters board, so I'm going to move it there.

Good luck!
