Hellcats Rewatch Camp - Beale St. After Dark (1.03) - Thursday, 11/16/11 - 11/23/11!

Hey guys!

Jordan and I decided to put together a rewatch of this phenomenal show to celebrate one year since it's premiere!

September 8th, 2010, this amazing show came into our lives and into our hearts and hasn't left since. Although it won't be returning this fall, we wanted to re-watch all our favorite moments, cry with these incredible characters, smile from their victories and relive all the greatest moments one last time. This show truly changed my life, and it impacted me more than I ever expected it to, and I know that alot of you feel the same way. So, every week from now until mid-Feburary, we will be re-watching one episode per week.

We'd also like to make the announcement that after this re-watch, Jordan and I do plan to shut down the board. Although we both adore the show more than words can properly express, and we'd absolutely love to continue posting here for years to come, neither of us think that it's exactly feasible due to such limited material with there only being one season and all. We wanted to end the board on a high note and a re-watch exactly one year after it's premiere seems like the right way to end things.

I have put together a short little questionnaire and this will be used for each episode, so feel free to answer the questions, but it's definitely not necessary! Watch when you can, come in and post your thoughts, what you liked, what you wish could've been improved upon, who your favorite characters were, etc. We encourage and appreciate all participation! Thank you guys so much, for all the wonderful memories! Let's make this rewatch one for the record books!

The Pilot ("A World Full of Strangers"): 1x01 • Air Date: September 8th, 2010 • Written by: Kevin Murphy

Marti Perkins, a pre-law student at Lancer University, discovers that her scholarship has been canceled and her well-meaning but irresponsible mother, Wanda has neglected to inform her. Broke and out of options, Marti realizes the only way she can stay in school is to win a place on the Hellcats – Lancer’s legendary cheer squad – and the scholarship that comes with it. Despite a confrontation with the Hellcats peppy team captain, Savannah, Marti wins over coach Vanessa Lodge, makes the squad and is thrust into a competitive world unlike anything she has ever known. With her best friend Dan by her side, Marti navigates her new world as a cheerleader and Savannah’s new roommate, while trying to avoid any interaction with squad member Alice Verdura, who is instantly jealous when she realizes that Marti has caught the eye of Alice’s ex-boyfriend Lewis Flynn.

First of... *clings to this board* It's sad to see the one place where I could talk about this show... so let's DO end it on a high-note...

Second... do we post our "findings" here? Like the original discussion posts?

serendipity or fate 09-08-2011 09:46 AM

 We'll still have the television board to talk about the show, so that's good. It's just a lot of work to keep this board going when it's usually only the three of us. If we had just gotten a season 2. :(

You can definitely just repost those discussion posts if you'd like, but you don't have to. You can post anything you want, really. Once or while your watching the episode just pop in here and post your thoughts/feelings, etc. Or you can answer the questions. :) This will be the only thread for the rewatch though. I will just make a post with the same information as the OP and a new art when it's time for a new episode. :D

xheartrockx 09-09-2011 04:11 PM

I'll be sure to squeeze in a re-watch this weekend. I have it all on my external HD, so....

xheartrockx 09-12-2011 04:05 AM

Sorry for the double post.... I'll just use your little questionaire to get things off the ground :)

Favorite character this episode:
Most likely Marti. And Savannah. I'm usually not a fan of female leads but I like the chemistry between these two.
Least favorite character this episode:
Probably... Wanda. I know there's a point to it but I don't understand her nonchalance about the whole scholarship thing.
Favorite quote this episode:
“Democracy is a bitch.” - “Apparently so are you.”
Funniest scene this episode:
Marti's and Savannah's stand-off in the dean's office. Nothing like a good cat fight.
Favorite part of the storyline/favorite arc this episode: Why?
I love the try-out and the dance to the Black Eyed Peas song because I love the dancing scenes... and the very end of the episode. Nothing like a good power walk and that “Fly” on Marti's arm... plus, they play Mika during that scene, so...
What would you change/have done differently? Why?
I find the transition between “OMG how can anybody be a cheerleader.” and “Let's start over, I wanna be part of the team” a little harsh, especially taking into account that Marti has been doing gymnastic (which to me, isn't that far off). I understand that they needed do it quickly in order to get on with the story but I would have prefered to either not have Marti be so negative in the beginning or for her to have more trouble getting into the group.

Also, and this goes for the entire show, I would have loved to see more of Mart's world. There are a few bits in this episode but after that, we never go back to it.
Best dressed character this episode:
Marti – I really like her style in generally. It reflects her character very much and it is, sort of, the way I dress, so...
Prettiest scene this episode (cinematography):
I'll get back to you on this with a graphic :)
Finally, what would you rate this episode out of 10:
I'd say a 7. First episode are never very representational for the show but it got the ball rolling and introduced all the characters and most of the storylines, so... it's a solid episode.

serendipity or fate 09-12-2011 05:03 PM

Oh my Gosh. I am so happy that they got rid of those voiceovers by Marti at the beginning of every episode. They just take you out of the moment so much!

Aww, DM's first scene. This one is always a favorite. It's just awesome. So much wit and finishing each other's sentences. :sigh:

 You know what I actually never even noticed.. The fact that Marti was literally writing checks to pay bills when she found her tuition notice. Aww, Marti backstory and insight already.

We got a tiny bit more in 1x04. But you're right, I would have absolutely loved to see more of both Dan and Marti hanging out where they grew up and learn more about that whole culture.

Quote:

Probably... Wanda. I know there's a point to it but I don't understand her nonchalance about the whole scholarship thing.
The first time I watched this episode, this really irked me too. And kinda threw me. I was just confused... but as the season progresses, it's clear that that scene was meant to set the precendent and the tone for their entire dynamic and simply explain that this is how it's always been. Wanda was the spaz, the irresponsible, wrought-with-guilt alcoholic and Marti was often left to pick up the pieces. As screwed up as that was, I feel like it brought so much to the show in terms of dynamics and especially for Marti as a character. Plus, once we figured out why Wanda (probably) took up drinking in the first place, I fell even more in love with her because it takes such a strong person to do what they can and truly believe that they are doing what's best for their daughter even if that impacted her ability as a mother and as a person.

"Glad you can find joy in your job." :rotfl: Marti is the best. Ever. :in_love:

Marti and Savannah "fight"! :lmao: :rotfl: Re-watching this scene, I am so shocked at the fact that Savannah raised her hand to Marti! In hindsight, after having seen the show all the way through, and getting to know these character's as well as I do, it seems completely OOC to me. Any thoughts on this? :look:

I understand that they needed do it quickly in order to get on with the story but I would have prefered to either not have Marti be so negative in the beginning or for her to have more trouble getting into the group.
 I can understand this, but, at the same time, the fact that Marti understood that this was her one chance to stay in school, it made sense that Marti would want to put it behind her. Then, when she ran into Savannah in the room, she was so surprised that Savannah still voted for her, that I'm sure it definitely changed her opinion of her as a person, too.

:lmao: I adore Marti's dance to "I Want Candy." And Aly's face once the light bulb pops is adorable. :sigh:

Marti and Daannn at try out's! :in_love: Oh, my hearrrtt. Once Lewis calls out to Marti, Dan looks at Marti, at Lewis, then back at Lewis and it's sooo cute. He's so jealous in that tiny moment.

"You are mighty. You are batgirl."
"You are blindly optimistc."
"Thank you for noticing." -- "Hey. Don't trip #26."
"Love you, Dan Patch."

:in_love: :sigh: :in_love: They were always flawless.

And he goes from confident, to scared for her, to super proud of her during her whole performance. So adorable. And then, when Dan's staring at Marti and Lewis after try-out's while their talking. He's rubbing the bad of his head and biting his head. So uncomfortable.  :sigh:

You know what the try out scene always made me think, though? I always thought that they would go with the storyline of Marti's street dancing truly influencing the Hellcat's style, but they never did... :look:

Hehehe. Aly looks at the results of try-out's with one eye. Cuuttee.

Aww, more insight into the Wanda/Marti dynamic. I almost wish we could've just gotten a littttlee more insight into her childhood with her other than when it came to her dad/anxiety. There was so much potential there. It was such an original story and such an amazingly interesting dynamic.

"Democracry's a bitch." - "Apparently, so are you." :rotfl: Classic. It never gets old.

Aww, Savannah being all OCD. :lmao: I will always love this scene.

:thud: :thud: The chemistry between Red and Vanessa is ridiculous. When she turns around to him in the doorway. She literally sucks in her breath. And their loooksss. Guh! :thud: :thud:

:rotfl: Red kicking Bill out of his own office. :lmao:

And the fact that he still makes her laugh, then uncomfortable but still intrigued enough to feel insecure about her and Derrick spoke so many volumes about their connection.

 It is too early for that much pep from Savannah. :P

The Wedge! Aww, she's so cute!

Aww, Marti is trying so hard to make the cheerleading thing work. And of course, Alice is the best bitch of them all. Aly's performance while Alice is talking though is amazing in it's subtetly.

"Unless, I.. uhh.. what's the word? Oh. Prove myself."
"In my experience, once you're done with the bandaid, you rip it off.. and throw it away."
"Ohhh! Oh! I'm the bandaid. Got it. Do you invent your own catty metaphors or is there like a book?" :lmao: Marti is the best in the history of things being the best. I will always and forever adore her wit. Spirit annimmaallll! :in_love:

:lmao: Lewis being all gentlemenly and Marti being all adorable on the toilet stall. Aww. :sigh:

Awww! The dock scene! :in_love: Definitely my favorite scene of the episode. I just love it so much. "Yep, yet, that is some soft light and I want to snuggle with that light." Being funny and witty with each other, Dan feeling left out of Marti's new life, the subtle hints of his feelings for her: telling her he's not really interesting in Rosalie, being jealous and reaffirming he won't be replaced. They were adorable and perfect.

Practice! I love this whole routine and how they worked together. Marti was so confident. And the song is always awesome. :P And Savannah and Marti linking hands at the end. How cutte.

 Marti and Savannah really talking. One of the most beautiful scenes of their entire relationship. Amazing moment. I adored the Marti backstory. This is the moment I knew that Marti would make her mark as my number one favorite character of all time. She was perfect. Aly's performance was perfect and I just felt so much in this moment. I could relate so, so much. Amazing. :sigh:

Most epic walk in the history of walks. :P :thud: I loveloveloved that they paralleled this in the finale, especially. :sigh:

Quote:

and the very end of the episode. Nothing like a good power walk and that “Fly” on Marti's arm... plus, they play Mika during that scene, so...
I honestly think this is my favorite scene. As much as I adored DM and every scene they are in together, that scene was just so beautifully shot and it just gave you such an incredible feeling. It was an amazing way to end the pilot. "Fly" was my favorite, favorite thing about it. So representational of Marti's journey, the Hellcats in general, her position, etc. Perfect. :in_love:

Now for the rest of the questions:

Favorite character this episode:

Marti. I have a feeling this is the answer that will always remain constant. :P

Least favorite character this episode:

The first time I watched it, definitely Alice. I understood her motivations, but I already loved Marti too much to be too forgiving. :P

Favorite quote this episode:

"I live here, too. That's gotta count for something, right?" I loved that whole scene so much. And I feel like this quote represented that Dan clearly did have real feelings for Marti in the pilot (and much earlier on :P) unlike what some people believe. And I just think it was such a vulnerable thing for a man like Dan to say. It was a great moment. And I loved that they made it tender with the pause, and yet, it was playful and endearing because Marti joked about it, even though we already knew how much she cared about him because they were apparently so close.

Funniest scene this episode:

Ooh, tough one... I'd say the Marti and Savannah fight. I laugh out loud every time I watch them scream at each other simultaneously and then abruptly stop to stare at each other and whisper their escape.

Favorite part of the storyline/favorite arc this episode: Why?

All of the cheerleading stuff. I loved both dance routines, the feeling that a family was beginning, at least between Marti and Savannah that early on. I especially loved the music in all the scenes and in general, it set the premise, so it's awesome. :D

What would you change/have done differently? Why?

Hmm.. I felt like this episode did a great, great job at giving just a little bit of screentime to all the pivotal characters. It gave them all a motivation and the tiniest hint of a storyline and I felt like it was really well done because it's rare that that is accomplished in just fourty two minutes. They even did a wonderful job at setting up the Wanda/Marti dynamic with only three scenes, the SM scene being fantastic. If I had to change something, it probably would've been something to help Marti appeal to the masses a bit more. Maybe a scene of her just having fun with Dan at the bar, or something. Because I definitely noticed that it took people a bit longer to warm to her character than what was probably initially intended. :)

Best dressed character this episode:

Marti. This opinion will probably stay the same as well. :P I just adore her style. Our styles are incredibly similar. :D

Prettiest scene this episode (cinematography):

Definitely the end scene. I don't know if it was the close up's of all those pretty faces, but something about it just stuck a chord in me. The lighting was perfect and the camera work was really pretty, too.

Finally, what would you rate this episode out of 10:

I'd probably give it about 6. I don't know... it's definitely one of my least favorite episodes. I feel like they were definitely still working out alot of the kinks in terms of the tone of the show, etc. And there are many episodes I prefer over this one. However, as a pilot, it was great. Made me fall in love with my bb Marti and it introduced me to the best show I have ever seen.

Sorry, I know I'm a day late, but I just couldn't get online. Anywhooo, time for episode 2. :yay:

"I Say A Little Prayer": 1x02 • Air Date: September 15th, 2010 • Written by: Kevin Murphy

Marti is horrified when she discovers Wanda in the audience at qualifiers and banishes her from the stadium. After Charlotte, Savannah’s sister and captain of the Hellcats’ rival team from Memphis Christian college, falls and suffers a serious injury, Savannah is torn between going with her sister to the hospital and staying to compete. Savannah tells Marti her parents stopped talking to her when she decided to transfer from Memphis Christian to the secular Lancer University, forcing Marti to re-think her stance on Wanda attending qualifiers. Meanwhile, Lewis blasts Alice for putting all their scholarships at risk, and Dan takes an interest in Savannah.
