If there's been a trailer out doesn't it mean all filming is done? I feel kind of dumb for asking but it seems like the movie would be done if a trailer was released

Yes, usually, this is how it works. However, most times there are teaser trailers that are made during post production. But when there are standard trailer for theatrical release it means the film is most times completed. i remember for example Star Wars and Jurassic park, there were trailers released while they were still working on the sound editing and sound effects....so, it all depends.
