This for me indicates even more that the fall out between Elena and Jeremy in episode 17 will be about her getting back with Damon.
Matt, Jeremy and from the last episode Tyler being so sure that she wouldn't forgive him after what Damon did, the show loves to do stuff like this where they let every single character point out that something will or won't happen and then the exact opposite happens because they think they will surprise the audience with that.

I failed to even notice this about the show

I think we should wait for the episode to see how it happens. We need to keep this in our mind that Elena is under the effect of werewolf venom which is causing her hallucinations and perhaps distortion of reality. So if the hook up happens in that stage, well I don't know if Elena could be blamed. They will have an awkward parents teacher meeting for Jeremy which means it will not go down that well. Like you I am also worried about Elena and the way her story is progressing but first let's wait and see how the story unfolds.

Explain that they broke up, but then still had sex? Which is probably confusing for everyone and no doubt Stefan will ask how it all went. 'Broke the bed' was just a euphemism, whether they did or not.
