Spencer Hastings (Troian Bellisario) is considered the "de facto head" of the group. Intelligent and extremely ambitious, she thrives in perfectionism in everything she does.

Aria Montgomery (Lucy Hale) is considered the "alternative" one of the group. She is more outgoing in fashion and what she sees as acceptable behavior. She moves back to Rosewood after living in Iceland for a year.

Emily Fields (Shay Mitchell) is the "jock" of the group. A highly competitive swimmer, she is considered the star of Rosewood's swim team. Sweet and shy, she is also a lesbian, remaining closeted for some time.

Hanna Marin (Ashley Benson) is the "diva" of the group, having taken Alison's place as the most popular girl at Rosewood in Alison's absence. She struggles with weight and self-image issues.
