Melissa witnessed the murder, at least a part of it or a sight of "two Alis", didn't she? That may explain the threat she was under. I think according to Mona's plan, Melissa, as the black swan, was headed to the masquerade to distract Jenna's attention, and meanwhile in A's lair, she would be framed to be A to take the blame with the costume design. It could've convinced Spencer if Mona didn't mess it up.

I think Mona's plan with Melissa was to keep the other liars running around after her. She didn't mess up, she fully intended to reveal herself to Spencer when she did.

I think it's one of those situations where she knows something vital that could solve then case, but doesn't know she knows it.

I don 't think it's been confirmed, but I'd be surprised if she doesn't. It would take a psycho to control Mona, and we know she's not in charge, who ever she's working for must be dangerous for them to be in charge of her, I think it's the killer.

we are not giving Mona the credit she deserves in how smart she is in this entire operation. Clearly she's not the one in charge, but she is still the one giving orders that are handed down to her.
