No, he didn't.
 I mean, in the books, it seems like all it takes is one to relinquish duties as Seeker/give up the Sword of Truth for a new Seeker to be named.  He could have lived and stayed with Cara. __________________

I think its simple too cause both young!Zedd and later Leo were able to take the title. Without Richard being hurt or anything
It would have been great for Leo to survive and be able to be with Cara cause they did care for each other greatly__________________

Leo could have survived but the reason they probably killed him off was that the writers didn't want a 5th member to join the gang. It would be a bit too much...
