first of all, though we don’t know that much about Wells, what we do know is this:

- he’s a great friend and is willing to sacrifice for those he cares about. not only does he keep Clarke’s secret, and follow her to the ground to try to be there for her, he allows her to believe the worst of him because he knows she just lost one parent, and he didn’t want her to lose another. he could have told her at any time that he wasn’t the one who told his father about Jake’s plan, but he didn’t. he let her get there on her own, when she was ready, and he forgave her of all her anger toward him immediately, because he loves her and he knew that was never about him, it was Clarke coping in the only way she could.

- Wells is implied to possibly have romantic feelings for Clarke, but he never pushes those on her. he never acts like so many “nice guys,” bitter and angry that she doesn’t see him that way. he is supportive, and good to her, because he loves her (and he might be in love with her, but he doesn’t prioritize that over his love for her as a person). he does’t expect anything from her, doesn’t act like he deserves her love just because he wants it. Wells is actually a nice guy.

- he wants to distribute supplies based on need. he wants to take care of people, even though most of the delinquents seem to hate him for who his father is. he doesn’t take it personally (yes, we see him get frustrated with this, but he never takes that out on anyone else), he just keeps doing his best for them. there’s something so admirably strong about being able to look at the situation and understand their anger, not take it to heart, and just do the right thing because it’s the right thing to do. that’s who Wells is. he’s someone who is just good because he wants to be good, not because he gets something out of it.

- he’s the one who takes the time to bury the dead early on. no one else does this. Wells takes the time to give the dead a proper burial. while everyone else is partying and running around doing “whatever the hell they want,” Wells takes the time to personally bury and give a resting place to the people they’ve lost, so they’re not entirely forgotten. people he probably didn’t know (considering he only got arrested to go to the ground) and who likely would have treated him just as badly as the rest of them. he doesn’t have a personal attachment to them; he’s just a good person who cares.

- Wells doesn’t let the way the rest of the delinquents see/treat him make him bitter or cause him to lash out, but he also stands up for himself when necessary. for all his kindness, Wells isn’t a pushover. he picks his battles, and when given no other choice, he kicks Murphy’s ass, but does no more harm than necessary. I’ve always wondered why Wells knew how to fight, but regardless, I think that’s a very interesting and good layer to his character. Wells, unlike Finn, isn’t a blind pacifist that thinks he’s better than everyone else, he’s willing to use force if he has to, but he’s thoughtful about it.

- he breaks so many tropes of masculinity. he’s kind above all else, good to the people around him, stands up for what he believes in, and doesn’t let himself get pushed around, while simultaneously refusing to treat his own bullies badly. and he could have been such a great character long term. Wells had so much potential as a character, and I ache for the loss of that.

there are also, of course real world issues that tie into why people were/are so upset about Wells death (a black man killed for shock value), but in regards to who Wells was as a person and why some of us love/miss him so much, I’d say the above points are what brought me there.

also, to be entirely fair, we’ve had years now to head canon things about Wells, and build a version of him in our heads, and speculate about what he could have brought to the story and the other characters, and I know that also influences people’s love of him.

that being said, I think, with such a great start for his character, it’s a damn shame that we didn’t get to learn more about him, didn’t get to see his faults and failures and how he would deal with the situations that these characters have had to face. we didn’t get to see them round him out and make him a character with the depth and growth of our mains, but I think a lot of recognize how wonderful that could have been. Wells was a strong, kind, loyal, just character. and I miss him.

I know that Eli wanted to leave the show but man, did Wells get a raw deal.

I especially liked the part where the article writer talked about him breaking the masculinity trope and the bit on him honouring the dead when the others couldn’t even be bothered. Such a kind, pure soul.

Yeah, I read about it somewhere. Wonder why though, I don't think that fans are aware of the reason until today.

And oh man, Eli's on Riverdale? He deserves a better show.
