Clarke wasn't an animal person. Never had been.

She’d never begged her parents for a puppy growing up, nor
had she been the type to give the stray cat down the street a
much-needed home. Pets, she’d decided long ago, were only
a way of making human beings spend money they didn’t really
need to spend. But then she started dating Bellamy Blake.

Bellamy loved animals almost as much as he loved people, and
that was really saying something. He was an utter softie once a
person got to know him. He was incapable of walking by a pet
store without stopping to look inside at all the dogs available
for adoption, and Clarke often caught him awake in the middle
of the night on his phone, not looking at pornography the way
a normal man would, but rather looking at the local Humane
Society’s website, just to see if there were any pets needing a
a home like theirs. Dogs, she noticed, especially interested him.

For their first Christmas together, she decided to go big, well-
aware that the present she had in mind was quite possibly
something she’d never be able to top. On Christmas morning,
she made him close his eyes as he walked downstairs to the
tree, just like a little kid would. When she told him to open
them, he laid eyes on Tucker, a miniature white Schnauzer so
cute, so loveable that even Clarke hadn’t been able to turn
him down. Bellamy ran to him, scooped him out of the basket
Clarke had set him in, and hugged him, beaming the biggest,
happiest smile Clarke had ever seen from him. He kept saying
things like, “Is he really ours?” and “You got me a dog?”

Clarke just smiled at him, happy to see him so overjoyed. A
dog was a small price to pay for everything he’d given her
this past year. Besides, for a cutie like Tucker, she figured
she might end up becoming an animal person after all.

Bellamy had always known Clarke loved cheese.

She told him about it on their first date, as if to warn him,
and he'd come to accept it as one of her little quirks, along with
her tendency to kick all the covers off at night and then start
shivering three seconds later or her inability to go a night
without snoring even though she claimed she didn't snore at
all. Cheese was just a part of Clarke Griffin. She doused all
her pasta in it, practically refused to eat a burger if it didn’t
have at least two types of melted, gooey cheese on it. One
time, he grilled the most delicious burgers on the planet, and
she didn’t even eat one because they were out of cheese.
Her love of the food was a serious one, and Bellamy knew
better than to question it. In fact, he decided to embrace it.

Their third year together was a financially tough one. They
were both still in college, but the house payments were
real, and they were trying to cut back on financial assistance
from her parents. In order to do that, they had to cut back
on other things, too, and Clarke suggested that Christmas
be one of them. “I don’t need anything,” was always her
answer when he asked her to give him some gift ideas.

“Then what do you WANT?” he asked. Christmas wasn’t all
just about need, after all. Want was a part of it, too.

But Clarke claimed not to want anything, either, and said that
Christmas sex would be enough. Well, of course he intended
to give her plenty of that, just as he always did, but he still
wasn’t going to feel right if he didn’t put some presents
under the tree. So he thought about what Clarke liked more
than anything in the world (besides him, of course), and when
he did that . . . well, only one obvious thing came to mind.

On Christmas morning, she squealed with joy when she opened
up a huge bag full of cheese products. He’d had to keep many
of them hidden in the back of the refrigerator, of course, which
wasn’t an easy thing to do when she had her own cheese radar
in her head. But he’d done it, and it was worth it to see the look
on her face. She didn’t hesitate to tear open a package of string
cheese and take two pieces out, one for him and one for her.
“Best gift ever!” she exclaimed. But he just smirked, feeling like
the Christmas sex later would still manage to top this.
