I think the end of the season would have been a lot stronger with a stronger Clarke storyline. I think the core idea of her doing anything to protect Madi is solid and makes sense. But there were a lot of things that didn’t make sense: i.e. why didn’t she take the flame out in 5x10 when she had the chance while Madi was asleep? Why did they include that awful scene of her shocking Madi after experiencing it herself? Why did they not really drive home the fact that Clarke thought Bellamy was dead? (That would have helped the audience understand even more why she was so insistent on protecting Madi if it was made explicitly clear that she believed her other person died because of her actions?) Plus, I do still feel like there was some purposeful making her look bad to make other characters look better than they otherwise may have (I’m referring to Echo and Octavia there.)

But really, through 5x08 at least, I had no complaints with Clarke’s storyline. In fact, her storyline was one of my favorite parts of 5A.

It was plot driven but funnily enough, the plot didn't move very much over the season either. I never like seeing core characters getting sacrificed for some drama, especially when it doesn't really go anywhere either. Hopefully S6 is more character driven

Exactly, it's very frustrating to watch especially when you have read headcanons written by fans which flesh out her characterisation/motivations better than the writers.

Clarke, apart from her emotions over Madi, seemed almost robot-like during most of season 5 and we never really got a sense of why she was so desperate/willing to go so far with some of her actions.

It really is, especially since someone who gets paid to write should be do a better job than someone who writes fanfic in their spare time.

Because it was plot over emotions with a bad plot at that in S5. We needed to see the above stuff though to truly have her actions make sense for us. We should not have to be head-cannoning things like this!

They really did a crappy job when it comes to Clarke reacting to Bellamy being most likely dead.

Considering it was her desire to save him that finally convinced her to let Madi go, they really should have shown more of that.

They're clearly the two most important people to Clarke apart from Abby but it really wasn't conveyed very well when it came to Bellamy.

I don’t know about Abby, Clarke didn’t seem too worried about her throughout the majority of season 5. (That was weird.)

I think saying they did a crappy job is being too nice lol. The writers also did a bad job with Clarke/Abby's relationship last season too

Clarke was concerned about Abby but yeah, we didn't really see Abby reacting to Clarke being freaking alive (another example of bad writing last season) or even caring about her much in season 5.
