I gotta say, I DO think it's a shame.
The 100 generally doesn't do one-dimensional characters. They're usually grey.
And I felt like the show showed us this really black&white character. And they told us he was grey, but didn't show it. And by the time they did show it a bit (the flashbacks), it was just too dang late.
Listen, I would've hated Pike either way for what he did, but I think the character could've had more potential and I even could've seen his side if they had shown it to me.

I think Pike was a grey character, but because we never got to know the good parts of him before knowing the bad, it really turned people off to him.

I agree, Paula. When they showed us the flashbacks, it was a case of too-little-too-late when it came to Pike. He was already at the point of no return (to me) at that point and it's a real shame ... Mike is wonderful and it's nothing to do with his acting at all but the character just wasn't written as well as it could have been.

No, you make perfect sense, Paula.

I think where I differ from you two is that the flashbacks weren’t really a little too late for me. I mean, I wasn’t suddenly a Pike fan after that, but it was enough that I did have some hope he could do some more good (like he had back on the Ark) after doing so much bad on Earth.

I think the flashback was a couple episodes too late - they were so intent on showing him as this...grounder-hating dude who just wasn't interested in anything other than grounder-revenge, then damage was done, then they showed us a bit of his past. I don't think it should work that way. Plus after that, he wasn't redeemed in any sort of way so what was the point

(At least, this is how I remember it - I haven't done a full season 3 rewatch yet)

I tend to agree, Lisa. I think that TPTB tried so hard to define who Pike was upfront so I just couldn't see past his actions even if I could understand his anti Grounder sentiment to some extent. Plus, any goodwill that I could have had for him went out the window the moment that he killed Lincoln.

I always say, it’s that whole teacher thing that struck a chord with me in the flashbacks. I mean . . . I can relate to his frustration and feeling of uselessness with the kids.
