Thinking about my own question here . . . If Bellamy had grown up with a father, or even with Octavia's father, I think his relationship with her would be totally different, because he wouldn't have ever been that father figure for her. I don't doubt that he'd still love her a lot, but I don't think they'd be quite as close as they are. I also don't know if he would put so much pressure on himself. I feel like Bellamy constantly feels the weight of the world on his shoulders, in large part because he had to step up so much at just six years old. So if he hadn't had to step up, or hadn't had to step up as much, then I think he wouldn't be the same person.

Oh my god, Lisa, I have this mixed sense of excitement and envy going on. Buy EVERYTHING you can. You won't regret it!

You know, when I meet Bob, I might tell him I loved him in LITWC. I'm sure he doesn't hear that as much since that movie is so hard to find.

I'm seriously gonna be the last person on the planet to meet Bob, I feel.

The good news too is that James Marsters is supposed to be there Friday now as well, so I'm going to try and get a selfie with him too if their schedules don't clash.
Oh my god, James Marsters is so wonderful! He's a fan favorite at these conventions for sure. If it's anything like the conventions I have gone to, you shouldn't have any trouble getting stuff from both of them.

I can't even tell you how many James selfies, pics, and autographs I have at this point. I even have a motivational video message from him. He is sooooo easy to talk to!

For sure, who he is was shaped by his experiences from young and not having a father presence in his life, that's hugely life altering. And also Aurora thrusting such a huge responsibility on him to care for Octavia even though he was a child himself.

No, you're not. I am.

Sarah, at this point, I feel like even you'll meet him before I will.

So I'm writing this Modern AU version of Bellamy right now, and I'm trying to keep him as in character as possible, so the lack of a father figure in his life is one of the things I'm carrying over from the canonverse. In a way, writing this AU Bellamy is making me think really hard about who Canon Bellamy is.

Nah, I seriously doubt that.

That's an important part of his backstory so I love that you're keeping that in.

Just realised, you can see Arryn in the background. I love her outfit.

To answer your question, April- I think we would've seen a less protective Bellamy. I think he would've had the natural big brother thing going but it would been a little different if a father was in place to hold that down. Without a father figure, Bellamy took on the role of brother and father in a way. He needed to be strong for his mother and sister at a very young age and it shaped his life for the most part. It's who he is now.
Even in his need to protect the 100, it comes from that heavy burden laid upon him as a kid.

I think having a father would be close to what we see from Kane. Ultimate respect. Bellamy would undoubtedly disagree and fight with his father but you'd know and see the respect there. His father would probably also be the person taking a hard line with him when he got out of hand. I always wondered if Bellamy's father died? If he was apart of the guard? That could've been interesting. Bellamy coming up through the guard under his father's tutelage.

It's a mystery about both the Blake's dad's. Was Aurora really that loose? I know she was banging that one guard to keep her secret/get Bellamy a job but was she actually married to Bellamy's father? Was that guard dude Octavia's dad? So many questions.

I agree that we'd probably see something similar to the relationship that Bellamy has with Kane but somehow, there's still some distance between them there (among other reasons, Kane being part of the council that floated Aurora) ... whereas from his relationship with Octavia, we know how much he values family so I'd imagine that he'd be super close to his dad and would be protective over him too, though in a different manner.

There was no concept of marriage on the Ark, so I suppose that a lot of the Arkers might not have been exclusive.

I don't really know how to answer this question. I think it's very possible that Bellamy would carry less of the weight of the world on his shoulders if he had a father, but ultimately I think it depends on what type of father figure he had and his relationship with him.

Are you sure? Abby and Jake seemed pretty married. Though it seems like very few of the characters have two parents. Which makes me wonder if it's one child per person or per couple, since couples seem kind of rare?

Yeah, you're probably right. I hadn't really thought about that, but Bellamy is so used to taking care of people and protecting people that, even though his first ambition may have been to seize power on the ground and become the leader, ultimately, it morphed into what he was accustomed to doing--saving people.

Bellamy kind of has a savior complex, now that I think about it. Not like in an "I am the messiah" kind of way, but just . . . well, I looked it up. This is Bellamy to me:

Quote:
The savior complex is a psychological construct which makes a person feel the need to save other people. This person has a strong tendency to seek people who desperately need help and to assist them, often sacrificing their own needs for these people.

always putting other people’s needs first makes a savior not take care of their own needs. So while they may feel happy because they are helping others, at some level, they feel bitter and frustrated at the same time.
But then of course, in season 4, he started to realize "you can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved."

Yeah, it is all a big mystery. I don't have high hopes for Bellamy's father since he wasn't ever part of his life. I mean, Jaha didn't seem to be married, but he was still a big part of his son's life. Bellamy's father wasn't ever there. But maybe that's a good thing, in a way.

I don't know...how are selfies done? I hope like, I don't have to take an actual selfie? I suck at those!

I'm doing the photo-op AND the selfie, and an autograph.

The issue is James Marsters' photo-op is at 4:45, and Bob is at 6:00 (on the Friday). That might be too tight for both? So I figure I could make squeeze in a James selfie? lol

Lisa, photo ops go REALLY quickly. You're in and you're out, pretty much. That's how it was at Wizard World, anyway. So I doubt you'd have any issue getting both photos. And when they're not doing photos, they'll be doing autographs and selfies at their booths. Especially with it being a big multi-day convention, I don't think you'll have any trouble getting whatever you want. (Good on you for getting everything, by the way. That's the way to do it.)

James won't hug in photo ops, FYI. He says his wife would kill him. But he will put his arm around you. Not sure what Bob would all be down for since . . . you know, I've never met him.

I don't even have a smart phone, so we had to use my iPad for selfies. Eliza took them, which I was happy about, because I suck at them, too.

Is Arryn still attending?

Man, I was looking at the guests and . . . there are some BIG NAMES set to attend! Wow!

I think that they were definitely monogamous but I think that we discussed this before on the board, that there didn't seem to be the concept of legal marriage on the Ark. We don't know for sure though. I agree that couples seem to be rare, apart from Abby/Jake and Monty's parents.

Oh gosh, I suck in selfies too. Maybe you can make Bob take it, Lisa. Though I feel like he might not be good in that area either.

April, Bob has definitely done hugs with fans, recreated Bellarke hugs etc. So I'm sure that it'll be okay to ask him for one.

Well, Abby Griffin, Jake Griffin. So there was definitely a concept of legal marriage, but do you mean that it perhaps wasn't a popular practice? Couples do seem to be rare.

Have Bob take it, Lisa. Then you'll know for the rest of your life that he touched your phone.

Yeah, I bet he'd be down for a hug. I love my photo with Eliza this year, because we hugged.

Hey, Lisa, do you have any Bob/Bellamy/Bellarke shirts? You should get one. It's a good way to stand out and make yourself memorable. Of course, nothing will be more memorable than my pumpkin.

Huh, I did forget about the name thing. But IDK, somehow I never saw anyone referring to each other as husband/wife etc. Or maybe just not their practice.

That's a good point about the phone. Lisa should never throw/replace that phone then.
