Can I be added? I watched it last week on YT for the first time and fell in love with it. I so wished that I could've seen them perform it on Broadway. The cast was just magical together.

I agree that they weren't necessarily in love but they did like each other a lot. Before the hayloft scene they'd open themselves up to each other in a way that they'd never done with the opposite sex before.

You don't know how badly I wanted Wendla to still be alive. And you know, I saw someone post a comment on the hayloft scene on the YT videos that said that they never liked Melchior because he used Wendla, got her pregnant, left and she died. I didn't understand how they could make a comment like that. Obviously, Wendla was very naive and did not know the things that Melchior did about sex but I didn't think he used her. She was just as curious as him otherwise she wouldn't have had sex with him.

But to make the comment that he got her pregnant and left, had me wondering if they had actually watched SA. When he was sent away to reform school, he didn't know Wendla was pregnant and the moment he found out he left and came back for her so they could be together. I just don't see how that makes him such a bad guy.

I do think there was meant to be love, however fledgling and naive, along with the lust between them. Like, in the original play and the first workshops of SA, the sex scene was very different, since originally it was not consensual. They obviously changed it for a reason, and I think a big part of that was to make it a scene more about ~them than the act itself.

So to say he just took advantage of her and then didn't care at all doesn't make much sense to me, especially given later events.
