Season Four Appreciation Month -- "I'm just the oven, it's totally their bun"

It's time to discuss the magic and charm that was Season 4.

Remember when Chandler peed on Monica? Phoebe found out that she was having triplets? What about the incredible season finale where Ross said Rachel's name at the alter?

And what about Mr. Treeger? and Kathy? and Joshua? and Emily, Ross' second wife? And who could forget the crazy English in-laws?

What was your favorite episode? Who was your favorite character? What story arc made Season 4 so unique?

The fourth season was truly one of the most well-written in Friends history and I can't wait to discuss it with all of you!

Excellent. I'm glad we have a season 4 thread. Lots went on in this season.

Classic quote:
Ross: I Ross take thee Rachel...Emily

I love when they are at the beach house and Joey sleeps in the sand LOL
and when Chandler pee's on Monica.

That really is a classic Friends quote. TOW Ross' Wedding is my all-time favorite episode! It had everything--the comedy, the angst, Rachel/Ross and Monica/Chandler goodness, great family scenes, and wonderful friendship scenes. Of course the big pull of that episode was the cliffhanger at the end. I've never seen a better one on any other television show since then. Plus, the music was fantastic. I could watch the finale over and over again. It's just amazing.

Everything involving the jellyfish storyline was hilarious!

I love this pic... they all look so intense! TOW The Embryos is one of my all time favourites... probably ties with TOW Ross' Wedding for best of the season for me. Season 4 is my joint-fave season as well! I loved the Kathy/Joey/Chandler stuff, I loved Emily, I loved the whole apartement switch... plus it had great writing. Just a fabulous season. And of course, the beginning of Mondler in the finale.

Season 4 is my favorite season of all. So many classic episodes and funny jokes. I loved Chandler in the cuffs, Mr. Treeger, the Joey/Chandler/Kathy arc, TOW Chandler in a Box, the apartment switching, TOW Free Porn, Phoebe carrying the triplets for Frank and Alice, etc.

I even liked Emily. It was a great, great season.

I think Season 4 was the best Friends season EVER.

It's the only season (aside from season 1) where there was no inter-dating. Ross and Rachel had their 2nd breakup in 401 and Monica and Chandler left us hankering for more in 424, but otherwise everyone was free to explore their lives. The cast also looked fantastic this season -- I loved Matthew's look all season and I loved Monica's short look too.

Here are some of the highlights of what made this season SO AMAZING:
  • The apartment switching fun. It gave us so many good stories and laughs, and a refreshing change. It was funny to see the boys so out of their element in their huge apartment and Monica losing for a change, depressed in her boyish quarters yet still fighting to be the hostess!
  • Ross and Rachel fighting the first half of the season and Rachel fighting with her feelings for him the second half of the season really gave us an insight into their lives and their true inner feelings for each other. It was far more interesting than seeing them all lovey-dovey in Seasons 2 and 3, and better than right after their breakup in season 3. I enjoyed it very much.
  • Hate Emily all you want, I thought she was really really sweet in Season 4. She was cute, with the British accent, and she brought out the best in some of the other characters – Monica egging Ross to run after her to England, Chandler with his British accent – it was all great fun and different. The shock of him getting engaged and married so quickly was also a refreshing twist for Friends; and LONDON, BABY, c’mon,t hat’s one of my fave epis ever!
  • Chandler and Joey and their love triangle with Kathy was just classic Friends. It was Joey an Chandler’s biggest fight ever and it begat the fantastic Chandler In a Box episode. I loved Kathy and it provided tremendous growth for Chandler’s character. The first half of Season Four has got to be one of the best storylines ever.
  • Monica and Chandler’s subtle closeness is very cleverly interwoven into all of the stories. You can see them growing all the more closer while neither of them explores the possibility of a serious relationship until it happens in London. Look at them snuggling in the chair in TOW The Free Porn. Look at the whole TOW The Jellyfish story… Monica’s sexual advice for him and Kathy… the way Monica tried to help him get over Kathy… It was all very brilliantly hinted all through the season and I loved it.
  • Phoebe’s pregnancy –oh cmon . This has got to be the funniest pregnancy storyline ever. It wasn’t as huge as Rachel’s, which I liked, because it didn’t overshadow an entire season, but instead it provided with a strong backbone for the season. The whole surrogacy thing, finding out she’s having triplets, craving meat, being all crazy and moody – I loved it all. It gave Lisa so many great ways to interpret her character.
  • Monica was really Madame Nurturer in this season. She was all over everyone’s problems, dishing out advice like never before. Helping Chandler with Kathy, Phoebe with the pregnancy, Ross with Emily, etc. And her storylines with Allesandro’s were pretty funny. She didn’t have a love interest all season, but that freed her to be everybody’s best friend all season.
  • As much as people disliked Joshua, Rachel was just hilarious with him, trying to seduce him for so many episodes, then cracking a tooth and finally succeeding – before losing him in that wedding dress. So many laughs!

All in all I believe that Season Four was the last real Friends season. As much as I ADORE Monica and Chandler, once they got together, the whole tone of the sitcom changed. From Season 5 and onwards you hardly have the whole gang hanging out just doing nothing, eating pizza and being six friends. Now it’s all about their romance and relationship. There are very few Monica/Rachel and Chandler/Joey stories after Season Four. And as I said, no one was inter-dating in this Season so there was so much room for individual growth and so many laughs! I believe Season Four was the finest season ever; the characters were already etched in our minds a certain way and they all grew and changed a bit. I loved this season.

and when Chandler pee's on Monica.
I always laugh so hard at that! They made him look like a mermaid and he's holding his "boobs". And then when he wakes up and looks down he smiles like "niiiice."

When everyone finds out about Chandler peeing on Monica and Chandler is trying to stop it from being told "Don't tell them!" They'll never understand!"

And when Rach convinces Bonnie to shave her head and Ross says "Not that bad?? You can see the moonlight reflecting off her bald dome!"

I loved how flirtatious Ross and Rachel were during this ep. And how Joey wanted to play strip Poker and they ended up playing strip Happy Days and Joey ended up being the one to take the most off!

I did not like Emily. I'm sorry but I just didn't. Blah.

I loved the apt switching. It's funny how the question about Chandler's job was what the game came down to. Joey was like "Hey, what do you do?" It was so weird to see them in each other's apt.

TOW The Free Porn.. haha. They got bored with it but didn't want to turn it off then finally they did and were like yay, we still got it! Also the whole thing with Joey saying "What if some day I have a son and he comes up to me and asks 'Dad, did you ever turn off free porn'"? What am I gonna say??" And Chandler was like "Why.. would that even come up?" And Joey says "Well it happened with me and my dad."

I'm watching TOW Joey's Dirty Day and the line where Monica says to Rachel (talking about the "chick" and the duck staying by Chandler's side since his break up with Kathy) "You know what is so sweet? They haven't left his side once." And Rachel says "Yeah... I wish that rooster were dead."
