"V" - Pilot (1x01) - Episode Discussion Thread

Episode description

THE HIGHLY ANTICIPATED SERIES PREMIERE OF "V" ARRIVES TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 3 ON ABC

In the premiere episode, "Pilot," an image of Anna (Morena Baccarin), the leader of the V's, is projected worldwide as she speaks about everyone joining together and no longer being divided by country or separated by fear. She wants us all to unite, and is counting on a very important component of human nature -- devotion. At first considered a threat, the V's quickly become a fascination and a link to things that lay just beyond our reach. For Tyler (Logan Huffman), a teenaged boy, the V's are his ticket to being a part of something big and something that offers hope. To Chad (Scott Wolf), an egotistical news anchor who wants to further his career, his exclusive interview with Anna begins his desire to dominate the airwaves. Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a priest with questioning faith, is hesitant to believe in the Visitors' righteousness and goes outside of the church in search of the truth. There are other dissidents who believe the Visitors aren't who they say they are, including Ryan (Morris Chestnut), who is faced with a life-altering decision when the V's show up. And to FBI Counter Terrorist Agent Erica Evans (Elizabeth Mitchell), who discovers, while investigating a terrorist cell, what lurks beneath the alarmingly human exterior of the Visitors, resisting this new world has never been more important -- and never has there been more at stake. This truly is the dawning of a new day.

Just finished updating the opening post and I have to say that was quite an update, especially considering that I even left out some stuff.

Just 2 more days, 4 hours and 7 minutes until the premiere. Does anybody want to predict the ratings for the episode?

Wow, I had no idea we had gotten so much stuff, it's impressive to see it all together there. We're at 11 with the sneak peeks, quite a number.

Not me... I'm not saying anything because even if I'm not a scaramantic person... you never know.

What's your prediction?

It is and if you then add the first 8 minutes of the pilot on top of it you accumulate at least 15 minutes of material, which is a little bit more than 1/3 of the entire episode.

IMO it's incredibly hard to make a prediction. On one hand this is a remake and the pilot of remade shows always seems to attract a big number of people (Knight Rider had 12 million viewers, Bionic Woman had 15 million, Beverly Hills had 4,5 million which was a huge number for the CW etc.) but then this show has to go up against NCIS, the most watched show on TV which also seems to attract a slightly older male audience. My pessimistic side says somewhere around 8 million but my more optimistic side says 12 million viewers. But keep in mind that I am absolutely terrible at this. I predicted 20+ million viewers for the FlashForward pilot and let's just say that I was way off.

LOL!
I'm really not able to make guesses even if I wanted to. It seems tv ratings in general are less strong and constant (and predictable) than in previous years.
And there is NCIS. I just hope ABC is well aware of what kind of competition they've put V against and will take it into consideration when they check the ratings.
What were the ratings of the FF premiere btw? 14 millions?

Around 12.5 million viewers. Like I said, I was waaaayyyyyyy off. If V was going to get those numbers I would be extremely happy though.

I say 8/10 million because of NCIS. It's a huge enemy.

Bionic Woman had 15 million??? If just V was in another day...

Above 12 millions in the same time slot of NCIS? It would be a fantastic result, IMO.

Agreed.

I must say it's hard for me to predict how the fans of the old V will respond. On one hand, the visitors are a huge pop culture icon and the mini-series have a lot of fans. On the other, the weekly series seems to have been a big flop and maybe that cast a bad light on the remake for them.

Obviously, like everyone else here, I want V to be hugely successful! This may be naive but I am going to predict 14 million, too. I think back to a few years ago when ABC moved Grey's Anatomy against CSI which was then the top ranked show as NCIS is now and, from what I recall, both Grey's and CSI drew in huge numbers in the same timeslot - each show pulled in around 20 million IIRC in the first few weeks and each show remained in the top 3 or 5 in ratings for a couple of years. My theory is each show was so successful because they were attracting different audiences. Of course, Grey's had a chance to build an audience before it was slotted against CSI, an advantage that V won't have. But, I am optimistic that V will be able to compete effectively against NCIS since it should attract a different audience and because it has gotten so much buzz. And, because EM is so deserving of a hit show.

I just checked and it was 13.91 million viewers and a demo of 5.5. Bloody awesome numbers.

Just keep in mind that the total viewers numbers only come secondary. The demo rating is what trully matters. I'm hoping that V can stay consistent around the 3.0 range.
