That's why a re-read usually helps

this thread. I think we can go start discussing the differences.

Elena I want the Elena in the books. She had issues and she was dealing with it little by little. As compared to th show Elena. She had issues but failed to present it. I know I should not be pointing it out this fast since it was just the Pilot. Though, I got a bit disappointed that she never got introduced properly.

Stefan Hmm... I don't know I'll be neutral with him. I did like both bookStefan and showStefan. His reasons for going in Mystic Falls are different but both worked for me.

Damon bookDamon is much more fierce and heartless. I liked it better that way. showDamon may come as a little soft, but I liked how Ian played him.

Jeremy vs. Margarette I like Jeremy much better. I think he'll add more complexity between siblings that Margaret could give. Having him between Tyler and Vicki is also a great addition.

Matt and Vicki Them being siblings kinda made me question what's the ploy. Ah, maybe the next episodes can tell.

Caroline I love them both. She's definitely going to be one of the bests in the show.

Lets see.

I like TV Elena over Book Elena so far, because in the book she was quite anoying.. thinking she could get any guy and deciding she MUST have Stefan, because he was ignoring her and she wasn't used to that.
I like how in the show, you see more of how she is feeling while trying to deal with her parents death.

I loved Book Stefan, but TV Stefan.. i am in love with even more.. maybe it's Paul that is doing it for me.

It doesn't bother me, the fact Elena has a brother and not a sister. I guess they felt it would be better storyline wise, to have her a angsty, teenage brother.

Matt/Vicki - It might take me a little while to get used to these two being brother and sister, but i like that they are connecting some of the characters in the book.

Tyler, is just as much of a jerk as he was in the books, so so far no difference there

Now the big one, the SE relationship.
I don't think her going around school saying how "she has to have him" and him ignoring her, would be for a good pilot.
I guess the writers thought they needed to make it known, the connection they have.. i didn't mind it.

Damon.. hm.. seems a little too soft right now, in the books he was meaner..
But his personality seems the same otherwise.

Good stuff Jen I think the only difference for us is bookElena vs. showElena.

I think I wanted a much kick ass female lead. I don't always want to see a Damsel in Distress plot on tv. It seemed cliche. But let's see, it's just the Pilot anyway so I'm keeping my views open.

I don't think she is a damsal in distress.. she is just vulnerable right now, her parents just died.
So i think as the show goes along, she'll become stronger.

I do hope so. And I want that drama from her. That drama that her parents just died. I want a whole scene of only elena and jeremy dealing with their parents' death.

I haven't posted in this thread yet, as I didn't want to compare the two, as I like to view them as two separate entities. But after viewing the pilot, I have to say, I'm kinda liking all the show characters better than the book characters. They already have more depth than the characters in the books, or they have the potential to have that depth soon. They don't seem nearly as stereotypical as they were in the book as well.

I think the potential to have depth is where I'm going to agree with you Meg. Right now, it's too soon for me to say which has more depth as I haven't finished the books and just watched the Pilot.
