TVD Season One Discussion #1: The INS and OUTS of the first season.

I thought a general discussion thread for S1 would be nice, so we can discuss things.
Such as:

1. What did you like from S1
2. What did you dislike?
3. What things did you feel that could be changed or added in?
4. What are your overview of the characters?
5. Did the season end as you were expecting it to from the start?

Anymore questions is welcomed.

TFTNT Jen! I S1, it was pretty much perfect. I think the only episode that I wasn't into was There Goes the Neighborhood because there wasn't much progression besides for finally finding Vicki's body.

I think it was just meant to be an episode where they could relax and have fun. because there has been so much drama, it was nice to see an episode drama free for once.

I like drama and movement! Besides, technically there was still drama in the form of Matt displaying feelings for Elena while he's dating Caroline and I wasn't a fan of that. I wasn't into the double date. I wasn't into Damon, Matt's mom and Jenna at the bar and yet another person for Damon to hook-up with. I think the only thing I liked about the episode was Jeremy\Anna and the Salvatores fighting the vampires.

Too much drama can make my head explode And I don't think every episode needs to have progression.
I guess the writers felt there should be eps here and there that the characters could just splurge and have fun, for once.

Well Jen there must be an episode you weren't that into then, right?

This reminds me, when they did that Seventeen interview and Paul had the blood stain on his shirt, that was from 1x16! More joint DS fighting other vamps next season, please.

I see says the blind girl! Well, those are two of my favorites haha so that's interesting.

I think the season did end as I was expecting...or what I was expecting until KW said there's be no Katherine in present day in the finale. The whole season was building up to Katherine's return IMO.

It's not shipping wise.
I just felt things could have been handled/done differently.
I like a few scenes but apart from that, I think it was just bad writing

I was thinking Katherine would probably appear in the finale as a cliffhanger. It's how I would have ended the season if I were one of the writers

I really enjoyed this season, it was always action packed and fast-moving. It constantly kept my attention. But I do think that sometimes character development took a back seat in favor of pushing a story line or a couple.

I still feel that Elena's entire behavior in 1x11 was off, considering that only a couple of episodes before she found out he was behind the killings, she knew he abused and used Caroline, she saw him attack Bonnie, she knew he killed Tanner. I was kind of excited for that episode before it aired (as you can see by the things I wrote before the episode aired), but I felt that this episode really did a disservice to Elena's character.

And I think in terms of some of the minor characters, like Tyler, Matt and Caroline, even Jenna, the writers took the easy way out sometimes in having a lot of things happen off screen or just not mentioning them again (Caroline's insecurities, Jenna's relationship with Alaric, Tyler's entire purpose, etc.).

In season 2, I would like to see them focus a bit more on the characters themselves, instead of just going for the dramatic moments, cliffhangers and the triangle

I do love those cliffhangers though...at the end of each episode that just leave you want more next week like especially the one where Elena figures out what Stefan is, when Anna takes Elena, when Damon and Elena have to put Stefan in the "dungeon" and they sit outside his door, when Isobel comes back etc etc. I think that's something I hear a lot of news people say is a strength of the show, that it always keeps you wanting more.

Yeah, the cliffhangers do make you want to watch the next episode.

That's definitely true, but I don't think the cliffhangers are what "makes" a show. Yes, they keep you interested, but if you are disappointed by the episodes after that because you don't get answers to some of the other questions you have, you'll lose interest in a show as well, cliffhangers or no cliffhangers.

I think there should be more of a balance, and not "just" the cliffhangers, you know?
