Elena: "Damon, how did you survive all those years?"
Damon: “Enzo's friendship kept me alive, he gave me a reason to hang on to my humanity...” (5x09)

Enzo: "I don't want to hate you, Damon. Because if I hate you, then I have nothing left” (5x19)

In 1953, Joseph Salvatore sold Stefan and Damon to the Augustine Society. While Stefan didn’t make in time to arrive at the Boarding House, Damon was capture by Dr. Withmore, who was making experiments on vampires to understand their nature and the properties of their blood. Damon was shut into a cell and there he met Enzo, another prisoner, who helped him survive 5 long years of tortures. They became friends, shared their interests in life and planned their revenge on Withmore and the Augustine Society, once they’ll get free from the cells: Enzo joked about killing the doctor's dog and "mailing it to his house", while Damon swore he'd kill every member of the Withmore's family except one so he/she would be miserable... and then repeat his revengeer again and again.

After the one night of the year they are let out of the cells, a New Years Eve party Dr. Whitmore hosts to show his findings, Enzo came up with a plan for their escape. As they are given one glass of blood, if one were to have two a day, the vampire could build up their strength for the next party so they would be ready to fight. After a game of "rock, paper and scissors", Damon wins and drinks Enzo's rations for a year.One year later, Damon is pulled out from the cage although this time, after drinking Enzo's rations is able to break the chains. He kills Dr. Whitmore and the rest of the guests at the party, however a candle is knocked over and as Damon tries to break the cage bars, he cannot due to vervain. The flames begin to take over and as Damon realizes he cannot free Enzo, he shuts off his emotions before leaving.

In 5x10, Damon discovers Enzo is still alive, very pissed to have been left behind by his former friend. Enzo tries to kill Damon in order to obtain a antidote for desiccation from Wes, they fight but Enzo starts to desiccate mid fight. Damon injects Enzo with the antidote and the tells him he had to flip off his humanity to leave him. Enzo tells Damon that he was the most important person in his life and he ruined him and that he is just a monster and always will be.

After Damon is rejected by Elena/Katherine, he lashes out and Enzo is there, enjoying that Damon's dark side is coming back: they kill Aaron Withmore together, and then a member of the Augustine Society, Diane, too, after have gotten information from her about where Dr. Wes is. Their friendship seems renewed. Damon and Enzo arrive at the place where Wes is but are ambushed by travelers who are attacking them. While the Travelers are holding Damon and Enzo down, Wes infects Damon, turning him into an Augustine Vampire, a vampire who feeds on vampires.

Their friendship is again tested, but Enzo refuses to leave Damon behind, no matter if he puts his life in danger, since Damon can kill him, feeding on him as it as his fault his best friend is an vampire killer. Wes shot Enzo in the shoulder to see if Damon would get hungry enough at the smell of his blood to break the chains. Damon busts through easily and attacks Enzo. Enzo tries to remain calm and yells at Damon to stop. Finally, Damon pulls off and starts retching. Wes tells him the Travelers raised the acidity of his blood so Damon was essentially drinking hydrochloric acid. He'll allow Enzo to leave because he wants something from him. At first, Enzo insists on staying, but Damon tells him he tried to kill him once and he'll do it again. He yells at Enzo to leave and he finally does. Finally Enzo found a cure for Damon's ripper problem thanks to the travellers, who developed it from Enzo's own blood in exchange of information abotu Enzo's former love, Maggie. To gather those information, Enzo also helps Caroline and Stefan to deal with the travellers and the otehr living doppelganger, Tom, whom is killed by Enzo himself.

Finally Enzo discovers Maggie has been dead since 1963 and he thinks Stefan did it; he kidnaps him and tortures him until Damon arrives and declares he was the one who killed Maggie, without knowing she was Enzo's Maggie. Damon tells Enzo to get his revenge on him, to hate him, but Enzo refuses to do so, saying that he has nothign left if he starts to hate Damon again. He then shut his emotions off, attacking the brothers and kidnapping Elena. When Stefan tries to stop him by clutching his heart, without taking it out, Enzo tells him that his best revenge will be when Stefan have to tell Damon that he was the one who killed Enzo. He pushes himself away from Stefan, whose hand is still holding Enzo's heart. Stefan stares at the organ in his hand,




Later, Enzo, as a ghost, attacks everyone, trying to kill Stefan and Damon in a cabin set on fire, until Damon promises him he'll bring him back from the dead. This plan is linked with the one about saving the Other Side that is collapsing and Enzo tries to help Bonnie convincing the traveller Maria to help them, but they both fail. He then find and convince Silas to help Bonnie and Liv with a spell that will make everyone dead, including Stefan who was just killed, go back to land of the living. Damon makes himself blow up with Elena and kills many travellers and their leader Markos, making the spell working. When the Other Side is collapsing, Enzo doesn't wait longer to pass trough Bonnie and comes back to life. Damon however arrives late and is stuck in the OS with Bonnie.
