 From the comments I read on various media (youtube, twitter, tumblr, French forums) and reactions from critics, I can confirm that they were well received after the finale so I think there’s hope for them next season. They have a steady and growing base of fans but we are not as many and vocal as the fans of other pairings. We can do better  I think there’s a real chance that they could be more than a summer fling. If the writers decided to introduce this long summer trip it’s with the purpose of helping Matt overcome his fear of vampirism. Also the fact that Rebekah isn’t going straight to NOLA in season 5 and stays a few episodes in MF could aim at moving forward this pariring. I do believe that the writers care about their lovestory otherwise they could have skipped their parts in the finale and instead make Rebekah leave after graduation. __________________

It's definitely not just a fling. The writers have been careful enough to give them an arc throughout season 4 (from hate to friendship and maybe love) so I’m sure that they won’t drop their story as soon as Matt and Rebekah are back in MF.
Sure the spin-off will have an impact on their relationship but as much as the writers are trying to develop two separate shows, I’m confident that they are going to take into account previous love stories and respect Mabekah. That’s what I deduced from JP recent interview at the ATX Television Festival: Too much crossover could be confusing for new viewers who aren’t fans of The Vampire Diaries. Julie says they will be “starting the show like it’s a brand new show.” But with that said, “Klaus has a girl and Rebekah just came off a world tour with [Matt]. I'd like to know, do you (dear posters) have a dream scenario about the way / the reasons which would make Rebekah leave to NOLA while sparing her relationship with Matt? I guess my dream scenario would be Elijah playing the emotional card with the upcoming baby and Rebekah being unable to refuse because despite their disfunctional relationships family has been her only constitency for a thousand year and protecting this baby will require an united family.
Matt ackowledges this is the right decision. As time passes, Matt is stuck at the Grill while Tyler, Jeremy, Caroline and Elena are busy with college and their own issues. He starts to miss Rebekah deeply and thinks that nothing holds him back in MF anymore so he decides to start anew in NOLA and leaves at the end of the season. Cheesy right?! My pleasure!
