FLASHBACKS TO 1863 — In the aftermath of a clever plan orchestrated by Lily (Annie Wersching), Damon (Ian Somerhalder) sets off on a road trip with Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Alaric (Matt Davis) in search of leverage they can use against his mother. Meanwhile, Caroline (Candice King), who is being held hostage by the Heretics, learns some shocking information about Valerie’s past, while Stefan (Paul Wesley) learns a few unexpected details about his own past from Lily. Finally, Alaric turns to Bonnie for her help after coming clean about a secret he’s been keeping.

Weakest episode by far this season. Actually weakest episode since season 5. This was pure exposition hell.

I'm putting this episode into the never rewatch category. I agree that it was season 5 levels of awful. Oscar is the most interesting heretic thus far so I was expecting more. Surprisingly I really enjoyed Lily after wanting her gone last week. Annie is way too talented and charming to make me write Lily off permanently because she gets me to sympathise with her

damn stefan is hot!

i just dont understand what all these flashfowards are leading to because they are supposed to be 3 years into the future so does that mean the show isn’t gonna answer them for three more years? or are they planning to answer everything this season?

torturing caroline again felt like a bit of a repeat from last week.

and i dont like valerie, where the heck did she come from? and we’ve never heard anything about her which is ridiculous. and she had zero chemistry with caroline. and now apparently she was pregnant with stefans kid? i swear to god if he has a kid out there somewhere (even though they claim its dead) i am gonna lose it. and if she's the reason they dont work together will annoy me.

The Damon/Bonnie/Alaric/Oscar storyline was good, but the Stefan/Caroline/Lily/Valerie story was horrible. I wish they would've replaced the Valerie flashbacks with flashbacks of Oscar's adventures after he left the prison world.

It is so unbelievable that Stefan slept with a girl after he first met her. That is not the same human Stefan who was so nervous during his first date with Katherine and gave her a chaste kiss on the cheek. It would have been more believable if she was Damon's first before he went to war. This is just a contrived way of tying one of the heretics to Stefan and giving SC angst. It doesn't help that Stefan & Valerie have some of the worst chemistry I've ever seen on the show.
Valerie is the most boring heretic and it pisses me off that she killed the most interesting one. Why couldn't she just tell Lily the truth, since Lily now knows about the affair anyway? Is she afraid that Lily will choose Julian over her children?
Lily is giving me whiplash. Just last week she said that Stefan & Damon were nothing to her. This week she was all "my boys," "my sons," "your mother." Ummm, since when?

I thought the writers would have at least waited until Candice's third trimester before they started putting Caroline in the background, but she was just sitting & listening for most of her little screentime.

Personally, I think that they should just have ended the series when Elena died. The heretics are meh. Where is this show going?

I thought the flashforward in this episode was kind of meh, too. We get it, someone is after Stefan. I'm ready to see the other characters' future now, like Alaric or Bonnie.

Would have been better with no flashbacks at all. All they do is poison the storyline and poison the fanbase.

I stand by my former statement in its entirety by the way, I think this was the weakest episode since season five. None of the episodes in season six were even close to this bad. Especially the pacing was insanely poor.

In fact I'm having a hard time finding a worse season 5 episode.
