It is weird for Stefan to say anything positive about DE especially considering season 4 but he started doing it in season 5 so I'm used to it now. Stefan loves Damon more than anybody which we saw when he left with Klaus at the end of season 2 knowing the consequences of becoming a Rippah again. So I don't find it out of character if he believes it makes Damon better.

If it was only about Damon - then yes I would agree with you. But he's saying that it's a good thing that Damon brings out the darkest sides in Elena - that is not what Stefan stands for - he would never believe in that

Stefan has always respected Elena's choice. He just wants her to be happy. She told him she was happy with who she was when she refused the cure. They've acknowledged that she changed when she turned. So, as long as she is okay with it Stefan will support her. He might hate his darkness but everybody is different so he can't speak for everyone. I guess we'll see now that she's lost her memories if her views on vampirism and darkness change since she admitted that accepting vampirism was largely due to Damon. It's up to Elena to make the choice.

Realistically speaking when your girl friend falls for your brother you cut off ties and never speak to them again.

I've always thought Elena had flaws even before she was a vampire so she hasn't changed that much to me. It just got magnified. She was definitely a better friend/sister before so I'd like to see that again.

I think Stefan's method of trying to move on is precisely how his character would handle it. It has been proven over and over that Stefan loves Damon more then anything, it would make sense that he is the one having the most trouble dealing with it, he can't bring himself to forget Damon like Elena did, yet he can't accept Damon's death either. It's horrible and sad and it makes my Stefan heart hurt so much for him.
