I think the earlier seasons had a little more substance than that, not Elena since she was always about some Salvabore, but Bonnie or Caroline always had other shiit (even human Caroline) going on. Now I'm pretty sure it's only about who wants to shag who and if someone is acting like a total hoe.

I think almost every fanbase is like that though. I think it really depends on what you are attracted to in the ship and if you like one character over the other more.
