His voice was low, a guttaral sound. His finger lingered on her skin and all Elena could do was stare. Somewhere in the back of her mind she thought that his eyes should be concentrating on the road. Yet somehow she knew it would be okay. Despite everything she trusted him.

He pulled his hand away, her blood coating the tip of one finger and she flushed as the pressure left her skin. Her head was all over the place, she told herself. That was the only reason she was having such ridiculous thoughts. It was the shock. She should look away and stop being so stupid. But she couldn't look away, or speak, or breathe.

Damon's bright eyes locked with her own. He cocked his head to the side curiously. His nostrils flared. She knew he could smell it on his finger. Liquid temptation.

'Damon,' Elena managed breathlessly, 'you said you could control yourself...'

He didn't reply. Instead, he eased his foot onto the brake and slowed the car to a halt. Elena's heart was pounding in her chest. She told herself she was afraid. But she wasn't afraid of Damon. She was afraid of what she was feeling. He reached his finger forward and touched her lips, coating them in her own blood. Her eyes fluttered closed. Her body's natural reactions kicking in. He leant ever closer, she parted her lips...

'When you look at me you see Katherine...don't you?'

Damon froze.
