For me, that's really it. Back then I didn't mind the love triangle either. Also, Elena seemed less whiny. I'm glad the SE scene in the finale she was like old Elena--moved, but not whiny and crying ALL THE TIME.

Stefan was such a sweetie. I am now watching season 7 (missed most of it when it aired). Just saw the part when he got stabbed by the phoenix stone again after running from Rayna for 3 years, abandoned by his brother who couldn't face disappointing him in the future so he disappointed him for all time by desiccating in a coffin. Disappointed by his brother again, who fails to jump at the chance to take Stefan's place, even though the whole reason Stefan got marked in the first place was to spare Damon.

Then Stefan gets accidentally put into the body of a human who is wanted by the law and by a vampire who is in Stefan's real body and doesn't want to leave it. He nearly freezes to death in the human body, yet is thankful he gets to experience a human existence for a while. Finally is returned to his own body, but has since lost Caroline because he realized she wanted to stay with her babies. The only thing he was at fault for in this scenario was that he made the decision to leave Caroline without talking about it with her first, feeling she would rather stay with the babies and that he didn't want to take the chance at them being harmed because of him. He also led Valerie on, thinking he and Caroline were through, although Valerie was even more of a sweetie for seeing this and letting him off the hook (although she was not completely innocent in the whole affair.)

Wow he was a martyr for the whole show, wasn't he? I get that he would sacrifice himself at the end of it, not only because he loved his brother but also because he felt one should be accountable for one's sins, and he had committed many. However, as we all know, he did many of them in love of others, including letting himself turn off his emotions and become a ripper, otherwise he couldn't help being one. Wouldn't you think the writers should have given him the happy ending with Elena? Sure it was lovely and moving, and I love Damon too, but it really seemed that Damon got off the hook and Stefan got the shaft. And don't give me the excuse that Nina was leaving, writers. They could have had her go back towards Stefan earlier that season--or better yet, earlier in the show--by then the love triangle and DE had worn out its welcome SO MUCH except for diehard fans of DE. That's probably why Nina left in the first place--her character had stalled. That's why I stopped watching in Season 5--I was sick of the whole thing!

I never watched s7 so I don't know what happened aside from a few snippets.

Stefan wasn't himself without guilt. He's the perpetual martyr .

I haven't been on this board for ages, mostly because I stopped caring about the show when the writers stopped respecting Stefan/Elena and Tyler/Caroline.


I mean... How anyone could have watched TVD to the end and still found it entertaining or truthful to the characters, I'll never know.


Elena stopped being Elena after Season 3. I'd sooner ship her with Elijah than Damon, because at least she was still herself when she had conversations with Elijah (except in Season 4, but that season was a mess).


I think it's best to just make up your own version of the ending. I refuse to accept the show's ending, because Elena was never the same character after they forced the Stelena break-up.

Ha ha ha so true. Elena was too, wasn't she? She always felt guilty if someone were hurt because of her. That's why they seemed to belong together--same moral compass.

Very true. I know she became a vampire in Season 4, and so wouldn't be herself or be finding the new self, but she seemed to be all over the place.

Nina seemed to be wholly confused about how to play Elena when she became a vampire. She just seemed stubborn and nasty most of the time. With Damon, she was sleazy. She was being downright cruel to Stefan...


More or less a character assassination. It's a shame, because they could have done interesting things with Elena as a vampire (and I think it helped Bella change for the good in Twilight, as you felt it was something she was destined for), but Julie Plec resorted to making Elena nothing more than Damon's love slave, and acting as if Stefan never really meant anything to her.




I feel like Elena's innocence was lost after Season 2. Even Elijah picks up on it, and doesn't seem to like it. He always respected her, when she was dating Stefan.


Once Klaus intervened and turned Stefan away from Elena, that pretty much marked the downfall of TVD.

I think Elena changing was a natural progression considering she did die and became the thing she never wanted and had to learn to live again. I just think that it didn't really make sense for her character, once she chose to be human again, to continue to be with Damon. He didn't really change imo and Elena as a human was very much about doing the right thing and following a moral compass which is why she gravitated toward Stefan.

I think the show should have either brought SE back together when Damon/Bonnie died in s5 and Elena had no "good memories" of Damon left or she should have ended up alone and happily human.

There was a rumor going around that the finale would be Damon and Caroline compelling both Elena and Stefan to forget about vampires and to live a human life and a flash-forward of them bumping into each other and essentially meeting for the first time and leaving it open ended. I think that would have been a pretty good ending.

Totally agree, although I do agree with the other poster that her characterization as a vampire was all over the place. That would have been fairly easy for them to have Elena break up with Damon at that point. I read an interview with Julie that said that Elena would choose Stefan as a human, but Damon as a vampire, so I think they intended that to happen but just took their sweet time getting there until most nobody cared. I really like that alternate ending too--it really makes a lot of sense. If Stefan were to get a happy ending himself (on earth) I would think he'd want to be human. To not have memories and therefore guilt about his deeds as a vampire would be perfect, and Elena also would get to live a normal life. Maybe at the end of their lives they would then remember all that happened on their supernatural "adventure".
