I would have prefered this "ghost" storyline above no Elena at all. But who knows what will be revealed in 5x15.

I think a ghost SL for Elena could have actually been pretty interesting. They could have moments where Damon's alone and Elena's ghost self is watching him, he feels her presence and turns around but then she's gone

Exactly!!! I'm also imagening such scenes. That Damon can feel she's near, and that he says "Elena?". Or that Elena tries to touch him, but she can't. Or that she's screaming his name when he's doing something reckless, but he can't hear her. It would have been perfect.
