I think we're all in the same boat when it comes to Ian ... minds in the gutter ! Well sort of Josh , both are jerks , snarky , cocky persons !! But in the books Damon remains more darker threw the books than Damon in the show threw the seasons , even if you see an evolution , it's not as deep as in the show and he doesn't struggle that much ! At least I haven't felt it that way  He really stays an ass ! I think the real different one is Elena , she's a virgin and yet not as noble as the Elena in the show but her character evolve !
