Don't know why they chose to cover this topic but everybody definitely made it believable.

Well they handled it better than I thought they would so that's a plus. Everyone did a good job this episode so kudos to them. I was surprised they let Brittany actually act human and reasonable during the shooting. Though I did think it was a little far fetched that Becky would bring a gun to school because she was afraid of the outside world. I wonder if they are going to actually give Sue a storyline for her return or just have her show up like nothing happened a couple episodes from now.
Tlaine are getting annoying though. They seemed so forced and I am tired of Tina always being put in her place by these writers. It was an ok episode all in all. |

I was really impressed. I read a review that said once that Sue entered the episode, it became weaker, which I agree with. But I still love that Sue did that for Becky.
The 20 minute window when they were hiding in the choir room was wonderful. Some exemplary work by the newbies. My one gripe is that they're obviously going the Kitty/Artie route. Ryan Murphy needs to stop giving me hope by putting in microscopic, but cute Artina moments. Can't take much more. __________________

That was an intense episode. It reminded me of the shooting epiosde of One Tree Hill. I thought their acting this episode was one of their best.
Another thing, Katie (Marissa) is hot. |

I was disappointed by this episode. Don't get me wrong, it's an important topic that needs to be discussed and I get why they did it. However, to me, TV shows like "Glee" are fun ways to escape from the problems of the real world for an hour. Episodes such as this one hit too close to real life. If I want to watch commentary on guns, school shootings, and other topics in the news; I watch MSNBC or C-SPAN. "Glee" is a lot like President Obama. Both of them started out awesome but lately they've both really disappointed me. I'm still a fan of both the TV show and the President in general.
I thought that was sweet how Sue was willing to give up everything for Becky, though. The Lord Tubbington parts were funny. I can only hope, that like Obama, Glee will improve and go back to what it originally stood for. Don't stop believing- in both Glee and the President. __________________

Almost every show has "important" episodes. Even Roseanne had them. And it isn't like this is Glees first time trying to be emotional. We had Burts heart attack, Sues sisters death, Karofsky suicide. Now we have a shooting to add to the mix.

For me, Glee has always been my "Happy" show. Whatever the situation, reality never seems to hit our beloved choir room, and last nights episode physically hurt my heart after. Few television shows and movies have made me cry since I was 8 and saw E.T. in the theaters. Last nights episode of Glee was added to the list that dd make me cry. I cried from nearly start to finish. It was intense and very well written and the acting was in my opinion PHENOMENAL.
For me, the Becky/Sue aspect of last night's episode was was what made it more touching. Their relationship started before Sue's sister died as we all know. Sue's sister being handicapable and Becky being the same, Sue always felt protective of her. I can understand how Becky would associate the gun with keeping her safe in the "big bad scary world". Yes she is smart in a lot of ways, BUT, she is also looking at life through the eyes of a child. And children often don't think about how dangerous a gun can be. They see it used for protection in TV and movies time and again. From a police officer, to your normal average every day person being put in a dangerous situation to protect his or herself. That's why it both made sense to me that Sue did what she did to cover for her and why it in turn hurt my heart. __________________

I liked how they covered the topic of school shootings without any actual bloodshed.
Glee has covered a whole range of 'serious' topics already, so I don't think that episode was that much out of line. And Sue taking the blame for Becky was really touching. __________________

To say it was a polarizing episode is an understatement. How can some declare it as a powerful piece of work while others declare it Glee's worst episode? There are divides and then there are massive divides. This is one of the latter. When highly liked bloggers state how powerful it is while AV Club hits with an F, I find myself taken aback. This is not to say I am taken aback by either viewpoint as much as I am taken back by such intense polarization.
However, in going through the criticism, what I notice is that that massive divide comes down to something more intriguing than just a monumental difference of opinion. In some ways, it comes down to the craft of television writing and the belief that a show can have a well crafted moment while ultimately feeling meaningless and manipulative and even desperate. The reality is showing a child in danger is something that almost guarantees a strong emotional reaction. There are certain actions that do so when presented in a film or on television. The 10 minutes that define the episode are dark, the characters are stripped of any artifice, and a metronome is the score - purposeful choices that work in terms of creating anxiety and dread. However the entire sequence, from the abrupt transition brought by gunshots to the relieved "all clear", in retrospect, comes across as a cheap exploitation. Once it is recognized that the sequence is well done but such sequences already carry a gravitas with them, the viewer is left with asking what is the purpose. In the end, there is no attempt to raise serious conversation about school shootings. Instead it's purpose seems to be manipulation for the purposes of trying to get the audience to like new characters (Marley and Kitty in particular) and like a much despised romance (Sam and Brittany). Instead of strong writing that creates fleshed out characters, Glee has fallen back on lazy manipulation. And that is where the divide probably comes in. For a person that goes look Kitty is now being caring or Sam really does love Brittany, there will be people that go what about not making Kitty a caricature to begin with or how about showing Sam falling in love with Brittany instead of them some how becoming overnight soulmates. And for those that are surprised it was Becky, there will be those who wonder if Glee has some twisted belief that the Becky we have seen would ever do something like this. This is a common Glee problem. They rely on events in an attempt to adjust perception instead of focusing on thoughtful character development. So what often happens feels unearned and clearly designed to play viewers. As for the songs, Your Song could be considered the parallel to the sequence. It is difficult not to listen to someone singing Your Song and not be moved. So a song from a deluded boy to a girl we have never seen before is moving....momentarily much like everything else in this woeful episode. I don't think this is the worst Glee episode ever. However I do think this episode, more than any other, showed the least respect for it's viewers. And for that it very much deserves an F. Last edited by Inesal; 04-12-2013 at 09:54 PM |
