The next day (seemingly), the Glee club is back in the choir room. Kurt and Mercedes are fighting over her clothes (because he’s a hater and she looks like a Technicolor zebra), Finn’s focusing intently on tying his shoe, and Rachel is just staring at Finn. Obviously, what all of these stares is setting up is how much Rachel wants Finn (RM did similar things with setting up Harrison wanting Brooke on Popular) because there was nothing romantic about them really in Pilot and so these shots of Rachel just blatantly staring at Finn is the foundation for her crush on him and the beginning of their romantic story.

The group does Gold Digger (and there’s really no subtext here other than the group coming into modernity) and in the next scene, we find Emma and Rachel in the bathroom, where Rachel is giving bulimia a go because she wants to assimilate to Quinn in an effort to get Finn to like her.
