Quinn catches Rachel eavesdropping and staring off at Finn and calls her out on it. Quinn makes it clear that while she sees the connection between Finn and Rachel (a connection we’ve barely been privy to yet at this point), she’ll never have him. But as Rachel stands up for herself, and talks about how Glee status is going up (resulting in Quinn’s status lowering, seemingly because her boyfriend would rather sing than engage in heavy petting with her), Puck comes along and slushies her…and then Puck’s friend slushies her…and then Puck laughs and gives his buddy a high five as they walk away. So while Finn has joined Glee and openly displayed his friendship with Rachel, Rachel is still at the bottom of the social totem pole. She’s still as much of a misfit as ever.

I swear I want to punch Puck every time I see that scene. Actually, I really wish Finn had been in that scene when Puck did that. I would have loved to see Finn's reaction

Maybe but he would have never slushied her Finn is to much of a gentleman for that in fact Finn puts the gentle in gentleman

Finn prob wouldn't have done anything in that scene besides give Rachel a sympathetic look.

yeah, I don't think he'd have slushied her, but I don't think he'd have defended her either. I think he would have stood there in shock and done nothing at that point and then talk to Rachel after.

A quick change of clothes and the Glee club is in the choir room singing an antiquated disco song. Aside from the stares Rachel steals at Finn and Finn’s obvious lackluster dance skills (but clear enthusiasm for the performance), what this scene is about is a modern group trying to make an old song work for them just because it worked in the past and they’re told they have to (kind of like how they’re trying to break the old stereotypes and social hierarchy that currently constrains them). And as they’re discussing the need to modernize, Rachel stands there…and stares at Finn. It sets up her romantic feelings for him (because Showmance is the first time we really see them) and it's another thing that reverses as the show progresses (as Finn begins spending more time staring at Rachel).
