They totally did. I think it took Rachel leaving for him to realize how much he really enjoyed spending time with her.

Imagine if Finn had heard Sandy say those horrible things to Rachel....he might have done what he did what that choreography guy (I am blanking on his name) when he said "Now just hold on a second!!" (He is always really confident when it comes to Rachel).
