If he didn't want to salvage a marriage he should've just left instead of hurting her in the process but I guess maybe the affair made him realise he wanted something else

I think to an extent, he did, tbh (although maybe he just didn't want to be the cause of the marriage ending). That's why he kept calling her and showed up while she was at work. She was right to walk away.
That being said, I never really understood the writers decision to break up the marriage. It seemed kind of random. |

Actually if you re-watch s11 -> s13 you can see that they were setting up the divorce from the start... imo
 The writers justified it with mimicking real inter-agency relationships...  __________________

To add drama/conflict for the character
I agree - it feels like they set it up from the start  I also think they do it so they can explore new things with the character __________________

He was my cutiepie that meant the world to me from that episode of the soldiers considering him a brother
Kasam made her his fiance Poor Ellie not saying no but the fact Kasam was willing to wait for her __________________

It was very heartbreaking seeing her so happy & got so close (not that you necessarily knew just how close they got until after) only to have it all taken away so quickly
