Titanic Appreciation Thread #3: Because this movie honors the tragedy.
Welcome to the 3rd RMS Titanic: RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on 15 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton, UK to New York City, US. The sinking of Titanic caused the deaths of more than 1,500 people in one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in modern history. The RMS Titanic was the largest ship afloat at the time it entered service. On her maiden voyage, she carried 2,224 passengers and crew. The disaster was greeted with worldwide shock and outrage at the huge loss of life and the regulatory and operational failures that had led to it. Public inquiries in Britain and the United States led to major improvements in maritime safety. One of their most important legacies was the establishment in 1914 of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), which still governs maritime safety today. Additionally, several new wireless regulations were passed around the world in an effort to learn from the many missteps in wireless communications—which could have saved many more passengers. The wreck of Titanic remains on the seabed, split in two and gradually disintegrating at a depth of 12,415 feet (3,784 m). Since her discovery in 1985, thousands of artefacts have been recovered and put on display at museums around the world. Titanic has become one of the most famous ships in history, her memory kept alive by numerous books, folk songs, films, exhibits, and memorials. The Movie: In 1996, treasure hunter Brock Lovett and his team explore the wreck of RMS Titanic, searching for a diamond necklace called the Heart of the Ocean. They recover Caledon "Cal" Hockley's safe, believing the necklace to be inside, but instead find a sketch of a nude woman wearing it, dated April 14, 1912, the night the Titanic hit the iceberg. An elderly woman named Rose Dawson Calvert, hearing about the drawing, calls Lovett and claims that she is the woman depicted and she visits him and his team. She decides to tell them the real story, as seen through her eyes. We travel back to 1912, when Rose is a seventeen year old gir, forced to her engagement with Cal by her snobbish, newly widowed, mother. Soon, she finds true love in the eyes of Jack Dawson, a wandering artist dreaming of becoming a millionaire. They both live a passionate love affair, but it's all destined to end tragically, beginning from the moment the Titanic hits the iceberg. That's an intense one
Why do you think Cal had come down to search in steerage? __________________

Indeed, such an intense scene too
Ah, I know my answer but can't write it down/put it into words....um, I'll put this as best as I can...well Rose hated her life, and obviously, during her time on the ship, she was going off with Jack down to steerage...maybe he simply assumed she was down there? I don't know really.... __________________

You mean that he went down there to see if Rose and/or Jack had survived, and if they were together? Probably
I think it must have something to do with the diamond as well. Perhaps he knew she had it in her pocket, and he wanted her to give it back. Or, perhaps he went down there to search, so that, if he found her, he'd force her back to first class. __________________

He did look pretty angry though There was also a deleted scene where he saw a redhead and assumed it was Rose. I suppose it was to bring her back to first class

I saw that scene! It was probably to see if J+R were alive, and to force her back to first class either way to be honest...

That scene makes me sad Rose tried to tell Ruth straight there, but she was cut off, because her mother threatened her: it's either a wedding to Cal, or nothing.
