Labor Day #1 (S&S): Because Kate will star alongside Josh Brolin

Welcome to the first Labor Day thread!

Quote:
Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin have committed to star as a lost, lonesome mother and an escaped convicted murderer who takes refuge with her and her young son in Jason Reitman’s adaptation of Labor Day, EW has learned.
The drama, which is part love story, part coming-of-age tale, and part thriller, has been adapted from the 2009 novel by Joyce Maynard by Reitman. The movie will shoot in 2012 in New England.
The same year Maynard’s novel was released, the Thank You For Smoking and Juno director earned Oscar nominations for directing, producing and adapting the screenplay for Best Picture contender Up in the Air. The year before, Winslet earned a Best Actress Oscar for The Reader (after five previous nominations) while Brolin was a Best Supporting Actor contender for Milk.

This is the first time the trio is working together. Set in the early ’80s over the late summer holiday weekend, Labor Day opens with divorced, depressed single mom Adele clothes shopping with her 13-year-old son, Henry. They encounter a large, fearsome man — who also happens to be bleeding badly. He asks for a ride, and against all judgment, they give him one.

Are they hostages, accomplices… or just deluded? As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story and their options become more and more limited.
Reitman will produce the movie with partner Helen Estabrook of Right of Way films, along with Russ Smith and Lianne Halfon of Mr. Mudd productions. Steven Rales and Mark Roybal are executive producing through Indian Paintbrush.

Quote:
True love is so rare in this world, you've got to take it where you can get it. Though when it's with a convicted murderer, things are a bit dicier.

That's the premise of Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin's new movie, a drama called "Labor Day" that is a big screen adaptation of Joyce Maynard's 2009 novel of the same name. Entertainment Weekly reports that the pair have signed on to take the roles of a lonesome single mother and a convicted murderer who fall in an unlikely love. The film will be helmed by Oscar-nominated director, Jason Reitman.

For Winslet, it's another story of a single mother, following her HBO series "Mildred Pierce." In 2008, she starred in yet another relationship-based drama in "Revolutionary Road."

She's got a busy, very star-studded 2012 coming up; she'll premiere "Movie 43" with Hugh Jackman, Emma Stone, Jason Sudeikis, Ana Faris, Elizabeth Banks and Chloe Moretz; "Contagion," with Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marion Cotillard, Laurence Fishburne and Bryan Cranston; and "Carnage," the Roman Polanski film co-starring Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly.

As for Brolin, the murderer role reprises his last project, the Coen Brothers' "True Grit." He'll play both bad and good coming up, starring in "Men in Black 3," and "Gangster Squad."

Shelburne Falls abuzz with movie rumors of Kate Winslet, Josh Brolin coming to town

SHELBURNE FALLS – Anything is possible on the silver screen, and so it would come as no surprise to people in and around Shelburne Falls if they see a movie called “Labor Day” being filmed closer to Memorial Day.

Paramount Pictures, which is making the film, is keeping mum on where, when, and even if it will shoot scenes from the movie starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin in this picturesque New England town. The closest to nailing down the location was a press release by Gov. Deval Patrick saying the movie will be filmed somewhere in Massachusetts.

However, the buzz has grown a little louder after police and town officials from Buckland and Shelburne met Wednesday with a staff member from Paramount who oversees location. Terry Mosher, the Shelburne Town Coordinator, confirmed she was at the meeting, but in keeping with the cone of silence, would say little else.

Buckland Town Administrator Andrea Llamas agreed there were few specifics to be discussed, but she did say that the representative asked about changing the facades of buildings and closing areas to parking. Both Buckland and Shelburne gave the staff person permit applications for those matters.

Llamas also said she is under the impression that whatever filming will be done would be shot in the downtown area and last only two or three days.

“That probably means we’re going to be in scenes for a minute,” she said.

“Labor Day” is based on a novel of the same name by Joyce Maynard. The novel tells the story of a 13-year-old boy named Henry who lives a stagnant life with his mother, Adele, in the fictional New Hampshire town of Holton Mills. Adele, a former dancer, is keeping a terrible secret. When a mysterious man named Frank comes into their lives, things get interesting for Henry and Adele.

Llamas believes whatever filming done in Shelburne Falls for “Labor Day” will take place early in June. Kenny Patel, the owner of Keystone Market on 42-44 Bridge Street, hinted it might come even sooner. Patel confirmed he has talked to the Paramount people about filming in his store but cannot disclose any details. However, he encouraged a reporter to call him back next week.

“It will happen soon,” he said.

I love that they called it a part thriller. I like thrillers!

Sane for you too? I didn't know James Van Der Beek was in this film. I know him from Dawson's Creek. Curious to see him work with Kate.

Actually, no. I hate thrillers! I can't stand them... I'm more into romance/drama/rom-coms.

I'm with you about dramas. Not so much rom coms or romance. Unless Kate is in, then I'll be happy to watch.

He was on the IMDB list when I looked up the movie. And I did find this article about him being cast.

I only really know him from one show called 'Dawson's Creek'. But he was good in the show, I thought.

How about you, Laurelle? Anyone other than Kate from the cast you're curious/interested in?

Without seeing his job, I'd say Josh Brolin. There's all that fuss around his name, so I think that makes him a great actor

I know of his name, but I'm not as familiar with his work. At least, not from memory. I'll have to look him up later.
