I'm excited to see him in that as well, a 'serious' role, its been awhile.

Alec Baldwin said he contemplated suicide after a voicemail in which he called his daughter a "rude little pig" leaked on the Internet.

In the infamous tirade, heard around the country in April 2007, Baldwin told his then-11-year-old daughter Ireland that she needed to have her "ass straightened out" and had "humiliated [Baldwin] for the last time." The Emmy-winning 30 Rock star tells Playboy in the magazine's July/August issue that at times, he had "very serious" thoughts about killing himself. Ultimately, he was talked out of it.

"I spoke to a lot of professionals, who helped me," Baldwin said. "If I committed suicide, [ex-wife Kim Basinger's side] would have considered that a victory. Destroying me was their avowed goal."

At the time of the voicemail, Baldwin and Basinger were in the sixth year of their custody battle over Ireland. To protect 30 Rock from the fallout, Baldwin also offered to quit the show, he said.

Baldwin publicly apologized on The View and authored a book for divorced fathers called A Promise to Ourselves. Baldwin said his friendship with View moderator Whoopi Goldberg helped him decide to apologize on the show.

"Whoopi Goldberg is a friend," Baldwin said. "I called her and said, 'Do you think I can get a fair shake?' Because when you talk about family law and parental alienation, there is this unfortunate gender-based dynamic. Could I walk into a show with a strong female audience? Would they understand my point of view? I trusted Whoopi and Barbara Walters. Whoopi is an impeccably decent person, and I am grateful she gave me a forum."

That's so sad. But it's very brave of him to admit that. I think his admission might help people who are going through the same thing. I'm glad he got help.

Thanks for that article, Ele.

I wasn't aware that it happened when 30 Rock was already on. I'm glad Tina didn't let him leave the show.

Yeah, I didn't realise 30 Rock was on at that time either - they made such a huge deal of that message in the tabloids here it's no wonder he found himself at such a low ebb.

Oh well, he seems to have come out the other side! I can't imagine anyone else as Jack!

Yeah, I'm also very glad that Tina didn't let him quit the show. I wouldn't have been able to blame her if she did let him quit, but I'm glad it didn't come to that. I agree with you, Cee, I can't imagine anyone else as Jack!

Haha yeah, Jack is Alec and Alec is Jack for me. He's perfect for that role. But his voice mail was aweful, I've heard it once. But he took his daughter to the Golden Globes this year so I think they're fine now.

6 years is a really long time for a custody battle. The whole situation is very sad, and can't be good for his daughter. I can't imagine the show without Alec Baldwin. If anything, sometimes work can be good in a situation like that. It provides a focus when everything else is going wrong.

Alec wrote a sweet piece about his father for the Huffington Post:

That was a great read, Mr. Baldwin must have been a nice man.
Thanks for posting.

Sure, he actually writes pieces for them often. But this is the first one I've run across.

His father does sound like he was really great.

Aww, that article is really nice. He does sound like a good guy - eveyone remembers their favourite teacher & he sounds like that guy!

Has anyone been watching Alec's Bro on I'm a Celebrity get me out of here? I've not seen it but my sis is obsessed! Is it wrong that I'd like to see Alec eating bugs?! In fact - i'd LOVE to see the cast go in IN character - that would be some viewing pleasure!!!
