TFTNT! And thanks for this title.

I know, right? There was a lot of that initially when Amy was first introduced, though thankfully it's growing less common now. It's infuriating. The very basis of this show was about socially awkward, 'conventionally' unattractive nerds, showing how they can be such warm, interesting characters and how they gradually learn to interact better with the world. Why does the paradigm have to be any different for a female nerd?

I remember seeing when the first promo of Sheldon and Amy came out-the pic of them at the counter, and someone said "Leonard and Howard get Penny and Bernadette and Sheldon gets a comparative dog." I was angry even then and all I knew about Amy is what she looked like.

Yes, I remember all those naysayers in the beginning, even before season 4. It seemed pretty clear that what they objected to was the oddness and plainness of her appearance. (Plus, of course, there were ship conflicts, but let's not go into that here..)

Sheldon was the main draw on the show, so why couldn't his potential girlfriend be at least tall and attractive? - went the logic, for many people. Which, I'm sorry to say, is so shallow.

But I'm reasonably convinced that by now there are more Amy/Shamy lovers than haters. Full credit to Mayim and the writers.

Yeah, I had a "I'm going to wait and see" attitude, I wasn't going to go into it loving it or hating it because you never know, but those people automatically turned off by her looks? Ugh! I mean, Mayim doesn't dress like Amy but I find Mayim to be a very nice looking woman.

I agree she is pretty. But she is getting 'Hollywood' help too. If you have the right resources anyone can look like a model real fast!

Well I didn't say she looked like a model, and with her lifestyle choices it's very unlikely she's had any real work done.

That was just how I felt about Sheldon/Amy, too, initially. I liked Amy's 1-minute appearance, and there seemed to be a spark and some potential there, but I felt very iffy about any kind of new 'romantic interest' for a character as (a) well-loved (b) quirky (c) indifferent to romance and relationships, as Sheldon was. Even in the first half of season 4, I wasn't sure where they were going with her, and it felt like a rather tricky tightrope walk the writers were trying.

It was only after TAPH that I started getting really comfortable and intrigued with their interactions, and by THGG, I was a believer. Who would have thought the writers would actually learn to dance on that tightrope.

I went into it thinking I might not like it, but I didn't go in actually not liking it. I was surprised at how much I was okay with it. I think I started shipping them in Zazzy, but it wasn't until I saw this video that I realized it fully and was able to admit it.

That was such a sweet vid! I remember seeing it some time long ago, too.

Looking back, I definitely had a mental block about calling myself a 'shipper' regarding anyone with Sheldon.. the idea just felt so bizarre. It was quite a while before I realized that when the person is right, the bizarreness is the strength of such a relationship, both emotionally and for comedic value. Which is why it probably took me till Herb Garden to get there.

I was a Sheldon Purist until Amy showed up. I always had said that if someone came along who was intellectual and had the same values as him etc etc I could buy it, but I didn't expect the writers to ever bring her along.

What's helping greatly is that it's not just someone who is intellectual and has the same values as him - it's Amy. And with her it feels natural. With everything that Sheldon/Jim is, and everything that Amy/Mayim is, it just all fits together and feels right and works, in a way none of us and none of them could have predicted.

It's hard to explain what exactly I mean by that, but maybe you can understand.
