Yes I was surprised he invited an geologist voluntarily He said something about a trial run, so he probably thought, if I can surivive a Brunch with a geologist, I can survive everything

Amy probably told him about Bert, he was invited to his "party" after all (the one were Penny went instead)

it seems Sheldon did the surprise brunch all on his own, so I'm not sure about the social convention thing.

But can you imagine, Sheldon cooking, making Brunch (which he hates) and inviting people who don't belong to his "inner circle of friends". Our boy is growing up
