I remember the first time after the driving test when I was driving alone without any passenger. I was drenched in sweat when I arrived at the end of my trip

we do it the other way around here. First you have to take driving lessons, then you have an exam (theoretical and practical) and then you get your driving licence and are allowed to drive alone

When I passed the test, you had to be 18 to drive a car, now they get their licence with 17 - but you need an adult as a passenger (who has a driver licence) until you are 18.

I kid you not, this was what happened when I passed my written exam:
*walking to the car to go drive to the place to get the paper license*
Mom: Ok, you can drive there
Me: What?...No, that's ok
Mom: *Forces keys in my hand* You're driving
Me: But...I don't know how!
Mom: That's the whole purpose of this! Get in!
Me: Ok...*drives slower than a grandma*

I live in a small city too but the building where you take your driving tests is a little far from my home and in an area that I'm not really familiar with so I could have never done what you did

Not that my father would have let me anyway given how he's a super careful worriwart

My mom was sick of driving me all over the place. We lived out in the countryside so it was 20 minutes to and from school and I was in band, choir, the school musical, etc etc etc. She wanted to not have to shuttle me back and forth. But it's good she pushed me because I never would have learned otherwise...I'm highly cautious about new things.

Due to a strange disparity in the laws between the two states I lived in, I didn't get my actual license until I was 18 years old. Part of me has always believed that my mother somehow conspired with the bureaucracies to arrange that. The last thing she wanted was to have her baby girl behind the wheel of a car.

Yeah, my parents also didn't want me to get my license when I was 16 like the other kids because they're both quite protective

Honestly, the only reason as to why they're so supportive of me getting my license now is because some of the well-paying, part-time government jobs they think would suit me requires the possession of a valid drivers license (even though some of those jobs don't really require you to drive to places...)

I work for a local government department and a valid driver's license is part of the requirements because they may want you to drive to another clinic.
