I wonder if they did it essentially as research for the Amy/Fanfic episode? If they've never actually read any, it would make sense that they would want to get an idea of what it's really like.

I don't think so...I think they got the idea for the episode after that experience.

If you google big bang theory fanfiction fanfic.net comes up first so I can imagine they went there.

Given the writers for the show, I feel like at least some of them must have had their own fanfic experiences - either reading or writing - in the past.
