Kiwi actress Mia Blake scooped one of New Zealand's highest acting honours but she still has to work in cafes to make ends meet.

Mia won best supporting actress at the New Zealand Screen Awards last year for her role as Charlene in Toa Fraser's film No. 2.

But Mia - who stars in the new Kiwi film The Tattooist - says being an actor in New Zealand is all about versatility.

"There's always times when you don't have enough work," Mia told Sunday News. "It's inevitable that there will never be enough work here unless you are doing other things.

"I enjoy doing voice work. Sometimes I do have to work at a friend's cafe or consider temping to help pay the bills. It's not for the faint hearted."

Mia says doing cafe work even after winning a prestigious award is ?part and parcel? of acting.

"You can win an award, then the next job is six months away. It's really hard but at the same time that's what I love - you have to find a way around it. It's a bit of a wake-up call when you don't have work."

But Mia's certainly not complaining - acting has been her passion since she was a child growing up in Wellington.

"I went to a play at Downstage when I was about 10 and I just remember I couldn't look away. I was just sold.

"When I was really little I played Mary in the school play. I was Alice In Wonderland when I was about 12 and I just thought that the world had opened up."

The Tattooist is a supernatural thriller about an American tattoo artist, who accidentally unleashes a powerful angry spirit who destroys everything he touches.

"I was excited by the fact it was something I had never done before - a supernatural thriller," Mia says of the film's appeal.

"The images really jumped out at me - something about a creepy crawly tattoo on my body which totally freaked me out!"

The movie's lead actor, Jason Behr, starred in the TV show Roswell and has also been in The Grudge and The Shipping News.

Mia says she wasn't a Roswell fan but enjoyed working closely with Jason - who tattoos her character Sina onscreen.

"It was exciting to have the opportunity to work with quite a well-known American actor. He's so professional and knows his stuff. He's prepared and he's a nice guy."

While Mia's star is rising, she's not seeking Hollywood fame and fortune.

"I'm happy to publicise the shows I'm in because I want more to come but I'm not into gratuitous advertising of myself."

That's not to say that Mia has ruled out working overseas, if the right opportunity came up. "If I can make a living here, then that would be my preference.

"If I get an opportunity that strikes me, something really exciting, of course I would.

I'm always open to new and exciting things - I'd be a fool to say no to a great project overseas."

Wow Mia sounds a lot like me, and also every person out there trying to make a living. She sounds like an amazing person and of course the nice things she has to say about Jason

I can't believe this movie is out in 3 days!!!! I hope we start seeing news and pics of Jason's visit really soon. I hope KaDee got a couple days off from her schedule to go spend a few days in Aukland with Jason.

I know what you mean- I just found this too - wish I could get NZ TV for this program - BTS The Tattooist - 30 minute TV special. Wonder if any of our Australian fans can pick this up for us so we can see it too?

I just emailed my dear friend Isabel who lives in New Zealand to see if she can tape this special on The Tattooist for us. We have been friends since 1st grade and ironically she now lives in New Zealand. Go figure

Anyway I really hope she can tape this specia lon The Tattooist for us!
