Shiny new thread!

Thanks for the new (wrinkly shirt) Rob pics! Reminds me of the Lot53 wrinkly shirts Jason modeled for Levis. Seems like yesterday! sigh! Hm, couldn't find that, but found a wrinkly shirt TeenMovieline photo

Yellow, not Jason's best color. That blue is very nice on Rob, with his blue eyes...

Nice St Pat/NYC pix! You and your dad are so cute!

My dad had such a blast marching with his old college and fellow Alumni. I was happy I decided to go with him. It was a great time!

I went to the NYC St. Pats day Parade in the city for the first time last year with my Dad. All the other times we watched it on TV. It was great marching in it this year we had a lot of fun!

Hope all is well glad you enjoyed my photos.

Aw thats so cute Crystal! Aw I remember that photo!

OK so I saw The Cake Eaters on Friday March 13,2009 in NYC. I was really excited to see this movie being when I was at the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival I had heard a lot of good buzz about this movie but never got a chance to see it. Plus everyone I know who saw this loved it and raved about it.

It was also a very big surprise that the director Mary Stuart Masterson
and the writer Jayce Bartok who was Guy in the film of The Cake Eaters were at the screening and had a Q&A after the film.

The movie The Cake Eaters was wonderful. It was shot in the Catskills in Upstate NY. The shots were beautiful. The story is about two families the Kimbrough and the Kaminski and how they are brought together by death and different life situations and how they deal with it. It was interesting to see the family dynamics between the two families.

Beagle played by Aaron Stanford has a very fitting name. It is fitting for him being Beagle is a very loyal character which is why he never left his father and took care of his mother. He is much of an outsider as Georgia is and they are both trying to see where they fit in the world as well as what they want in life and are determined to get it.

Beagles older brother Guy played by Jayce Bartok is a lost soul trying to rebuild his relationship with his family and friends being he has been away for so long and has been focusing on his career.

Both Beagles and Guys father Easy played by Bruce Dern loves his sons but has a strange way of showing it. He also has a hard time dealing with lose but also sees that life is worth living.

Georgia mother Violet played by Talia Balsam is a character who sees the world in black and white much like the photos she takes of her daughter. She sees the world one way and one way only which makes it hard for her to relate to her daughter who is rebelling and trying to find her independence and finding her place in the world despite her disease of having Friedreich's Ataxia. However she is a typical mother of a teenage daughter and worries for her daughters safety more so because of her disease.

If Violet sees the world in black and white then Georgia grandmother Marg played by Elizabeth Ashley adds the color to Georgia life as well as to Beagles father. She is a free spirit and sees the goodness in life and that it is meant to be enjoyed. It is her free spirit that can get her into trouble at times but she means well and has a big heart.

Georgia character played by Kristen Stewart who suffers from Friedreich's Ataxia was very moving and touching. Georgia knows what her fate is with her disease and how she is getting worse and will have to be in a wheel chair soon and she knows she will die at an early age. However despite this she is determined to live life to the fullest! She is strong and funny and determined to have her independence and wanting to live life and experience all it has to offer even falling in love before it is too late.

At times your heart ached for her character being you saw Georgia as a human being and saw her beautiful spirit sour! It was amazing to see the beautiful and determined soul with in her and the inner strength and beauty she had despite her disease.

I admirer what Kristen brought to the role and was determined to break the mold and stereotypes when it came to people with disabilities. It was so refreshing! You really saw past her disease and saw how Georgia was human and had the same hopes and dreams and feelings that everyone else experiences and was determined to enjoy her life. It was inspiring!

However the cast as a whole was so talented and did an amazing, beautiful, and flawless job showing us the dynamics of family and of life and how wonderful it really is.

Over all the movie was very touching and moving. It was beautiful and heartbreaking at some moments and very funny at others.

I also liked the amateur feeling it had with the different camera angels and the out of date town and run down artistic houses. It added to the films character.

During the Q&A some one asked the writer Jayce Bartok how he came up with the title for the film. he originally was going to name it Heartland but he felt it didn't fit with the film and the story at all. He said how he came up with the title for The Cake Eaters because of the expression of "You can have your Cake and eat it too" meaning that both families have everything in life. They are loved and well cared for and have a great life even thought they don't have much.

He also said how this was his first screen play and got some help from his brother who was a script writer out in LA being the story does relate to his life with that he had lost someone and was going through a lot of the things the characters were going through.

He went on to say how he did not know anyone personally who had Friedreich's Ataxia the disease that Georgia has in the film. But thought it was a good way to make the two families come together and meet. He also thought it was a great way to make people more aware of Friedreich's Ataxia.and ways that they can help with finding a cure for the disease.

The director Mary Stuart Masterson said how she wanted to capture the beauty in family dynamics and how we relate to people in the world through a touch or some kind of physical contact like in a hug. Or how we relate to losing someone we hold dear. She also wanted to capture the feeling of falling in love for the first time.

I asked how involved were they in the casting process. Mary Stuart Masterson said how she and the writer Jayce had the final say in most of the casting process and how they were so lucky to find such amazing actors.

She also went on to say how it was interesting to see peoples work style. She was saying how Bruce Dern like to improve and would throw in lines that were not in the script to add to the scene. They said how this was wonderful because it made the scene more funny or added to the emotion they were trying to convey.

However they also said how when Bruce Dern who likes to Improve and Elizabeth Ashley who is very theatrical and rehearses all the time got together it was hard to get their timing right for a scene but they pulled it off.

Then some one in the audience said how did you find a girl who actually had Friedreich's Ataxia? Some people in the audience laughed. The director Mary Stuart Masterson said oh they are not laughing at you it's just have you must have been living under a rock for the past few months. That's Kristen Stewart from Twilight who was in one of the biggest films of 2008 and no she does not have Friedreich's Ataxia. We are asked that question at every film festival we go to. It is such a huge compliment to her.

Mary Stuart Masterson then went on to say how she was very impressed with how much Kristen Stewart put into the role. She said how she did so much research and met people who suffered from the disease. She also said how Kristen was determined to rebel everything when to came to stereotypes of people with disabilities. In that people think they are a sexual and have no emotions.

She said how Kristen knew that Georgia was a person and had the same feelings and desires that all of us have and wanted to show that she was a teenage girl. Mary also raved about how human Kristen made Georgia and how it was beautiful to watch on screen.

I also asked during the Q&A who did the music for the film because it was wonderful. They said how Duncan Sheik did the original score. he has worked for the music on shows like Cold Case as well as the movie The Saint.

They said how the songs used in the film were picked by their music supervisors Jim Black and Barry Cole. They loved how the music was a collection of different things it fit with the tone and emotions very well and added another demention and element to the film.

Over all everyone who was at the screening was raving about the movie. If you get the chance please see The Cake Eaters It was wonderful!

It is now playing in select theaters and will be out in DVD March 24,2009

I didn't realize Rob's mate Tom Sturridge was an actor too (d'oh). The film sounds awesome and hysterically funny too. Great cast! (Of course Rhys Ifans was in 'Shipping News' with Jason - always a connection).

(I thought I had a photo of Rhys LEAPING on Jason at the TSN premiere - I assume overjoyed to see him again - but I can't find it. Heh, kind of like that Youtube thing of Rob leaping on the Viktor Krum guy while doing Harry Potter.)

'Cake Eaters' sounds really good too, although not so much in a fun way. How funny that audiences thought Kristen Stewart was actually disabled/had Fredrick's ataxia! I guess that is high praise for her performance. Then again, I thought the same thing about Leo DiCaprio in 'Gilbert Grape' (where did they find this retarded kid who was such a good actor too?) I guess Rob is right considering her such a great actress.
