Happy New Year's Day!! I watched the Rose Parade - missed the broadcast at 11 a.m. on HGTV but they are rebroadcasting it on the Travel Channel. I just love all the horses especially and the floats are cool - the truck that turned into a Transformer and the Roswell float with aliens were the best! LOL! - but I don't know why they bother making them all out of flowers and plants! I mean, I know that's the Rose Parade 'thing' but I think the floats would be just as cool made out of anything! Yep, I am a sucker for a good parade and this one always seems very 'down home' to me - local girls, organizations - I don't know, it's well done but not as slick as the Macy's Parade.

Mr ML cooked us a little roast beef (which only he and I ate, as MLette is a vegetarian and was at work and Mr ML Jr doesn't like roast beef - go figure). Came out pretty good for his first attempt (how hard is it to roast meat?)

We got rain and big fat snowflakes and then more rain today. Kind of icky out.

I ended up staying awake til midnight and we watched the ball fall at the last minute and toasted in the New Year with sparkling grape juice in fancy glasses but when I turned around to click glasses with Mr ML Jr (at his computer behind the sofa, as usual) I managed to splash some of the juice all over the dog (who was sitting with me on the sofa). He was a bit nonplussed and licked some of it off (I ran and got paper towels), so I guess he got in on the toasting also! We watched old Twilight Zone episodes, old Fred & Ginger movies, this and that - just a quiet hanging out evening. I still find it really painful to listen to Dick Clark talking since his stroke - he should let Ryan Seacrest take over already.

Sorry your Mother was giving you fits Wen and hogging the remote etc. sigh. You are a very patient and good daughter.

LOL VB we don't have pull with the police - if they say it's no parking on that side because of snow, and you park there anyway - you'll get a ticket. Later some idiot was parked facing the wrong way in our spot we shoveled, and I was hoping they'd get a ticket too, but they drove away before the ticket guy came around. We don't really care, as both cars fit in the driveway, but it's a pain to shift them around and when it's not winter, we usually park one on the street. Mr ML only wanted to shovel that space for our relative's party across the street Christmas Eve, so somebody could park, but he said after that, he didn't care who used the parking spot. But we were still happy that neighbor got a ticket, because they are the lazy people who never shovel the snow off the sidewalk next to their house, and everybody else on the street is very good about shoveling and being responsible. The guy who owns this place is just a lazy slug. He makes his wife put out the garbage on trash day, too - he doesn't lift a finger that I can see.

LOL Maggie glad that you got to Van and back okay and had a nice Christmas, and of course the relatives give you extremely fragile stuff to carry on the plane. I was re-reading the Tanya Huff books today and think I missed quite a bit, reading them so fast. Think I'll start over - although I keep thumbing ahead to the 'good parts' (generally good parts involve Henry, the vampire guy).

I'll IM you the cranberry recipes - I sent them to a couple of people who expressed an interest. You probably could put other type berries instead of cranberries on that cake. Although it might be overly sweet since it made to compensate for the sour cranberries.

Looking forward to seeing your photos of your trip! And glad you are back.

Happy New Years Day Everyone!

LOL! MyrnaLynne, that even Elmo got to toast the New Year in with you and your family! Well, he IS a part of the family too, so why not let him in on the toasting! LOL!

When my kids were little, we used to toast the New Year in with 7up because they never did like the Sparkling Cider, and they still don't like it... go figure. And my kids got my taste buds too about not liking wine, so no toasting with that either.

Actually, we did no toasting last night... Just watched the ball drop, and was lucky to see that, thanks to MOTHER hogging the TV all night!

And Lainie went to bed early because she was too tired to stay up since she hadn't slept well the night before, but I was glad at least my No.2 son was still up and we got to wish each other a Happy New Year at midnight.

And I'm happy that before my No.2 son left for the day today with his friends, he had one of his friends, Scott, come in and cross my threshold! I'll explain... In the Portuguese tradition, if the 1st person to cross your threshold on New Years Day is a man, then you'll have Good Luck all year long, but if a woman is the 1st to cross your threshold, then you'll have Bad Luck all year long. So, I'm so happy that my son had his friend come in to get him.

I know it's dumb and an old wives tale, but hey, I need all the luck I can get, so I'm not counting Anything out!

Scottie, You asked if they ever found out if the guy that was killed by the tiger was the one that was tormenting the tiger in the 1st place? Well, I really don't know because our News is Famous for NOT following thru' with their stories and it makes me crazy! So, I may Never find out, sorry.

I hope Everyone is having a Great New Years Day!

Hugs to All,
Wen

Hi, it's me again! Geesh, like the bad penny, I just keep showing up!

I hope Everyone had a really nice New Year's Day today.

I made some Hors D'oeuvres and desserts for us to pick on today, and my No.1 son and his wife came over and we all munched happily while we visited and it was nice.

They stayed till about 8pm tonight, and when they left, they brought MOTHER home for me, so that was a nice break for me. I do love my mother but it was nice to see her go! She really spent way too much time with me this time and drove me up the bloody wall!

I gave my son most of what was left of the food & goodies to take home and he just called me and said: "Mom, you forgot to give me some brownies!" LOL! Oh, Heaven forbid, I forgot the brownies! LOL! I told him I'd bring him some by tomorrow. LOL! He's so funny because you should have seen what I did give him... a TON of stuff, and here he's calling me to tell me that I forgot the brownies! Now that's funny!

No matter how old he gets, he'll always be my boy with the sweet tooth. And you should see him! Not a fat cell in his whole body! He's blessed with being able to eat whatever he wants and never gets fat. But then again, he's always worked out, and has been doing Delivery Driving for a number of years now, so I don't think he could get fat even if he tried. But it's not his make up to be fat... he takes after his father's side of the family... all thin by nature.

But me, on the other hand, can gain weight just by smelling something good like chocolate! Yes, I've been cursed with the FAT GENE! Argh!!! Such is my lot in life.

Ahhh, it's so nice to be able to go on my computer in peace again with no MOTHER hovering around. It's nice to have ME time again! I haven't had it in so long, and I've missed this place and Jason's whole site so badly that I was having MAJOR withdrawal!!!

I'm going to go read more of the other threads so I'll be signing off for now... who knows, I just may be back again tonight! LOL!

Biggest Hugs to All,

And Happy New Year too!
Wen

Meant to say I thought of you Wen when the Portuguese American float went by in the Rose Parade. I never heard of that tradition about who comes over the threshold first in the New Year. (Do boy dogs count? ) Although I suppose the Indian folks in the float also represent the other side of your family! Mr ML is like that too - skinny genes. Like Jason. Although also active so they burn it up. My brother also has skinny genes, but he burns it up with being a nervous itch.

Glad Mother is back home and you have some peace and quiet. Mr ML Jr also has a big sweet tooth, although even he is kind of overwhelmed with all the candy etc we got this year from the various relatives. He and his sister each got a chocolate Santa and we got a bag of those Lindt chocolate balls. My niece made this really iffy pan of fudge - it's sort of the consistency of frosting and has an odd cherry flavoring to it (ugh). I think we're going to heave it ho soon. Love the nieces but they cook the oddest stuff! My other niece gave us some scones and they were almost flat - very odd. I make scones and mine are good and I looked at them and thought "Don't know what these are... but definitely not scones." Mr ML ate them anyway. He's very brave!

Oh well, here it is, the new year stretching out ahead of us, and back to the old grind! Having to work a whole week next week with no holiday is going to be a shock to the system!

Apology accepted, Slipaway!

My two resolutions this year will be to phone my dad more often (I think he gets lonely! Only Uncle Louie to talk to all day!) And I'll try to not procrastinate. I'm SO good at procrastination!

We had a nice dinner with the in-laws at a nice tavern not too far from our house. We had those silly hats and noise makers and a champagne toast at midnight. It was fun, but I sort of missed being at home, to tell the truth. That's what we usually do. I think we left the restaurant at 12:30, so we weren't too late.

ML - funny story about Elmo toasting with the family! Do you think your nieces meant to make biscotti and called it scones?

Wen - I was wondering what happened to your chair, but thought that you'd just forgotten to mention that it had been delivered. I'm so happy that you love it. Great idea to get a matching one, then there won't be a fight for your chair!

Now we just need to see more of Jason this year. I'm feeling deprived!

Gotta scoot, not supposed to be here, you never saw me...

Hi Everyone!

I can't stay to play... I have an eye Dr. appt. soon but my Bro' emailed me this and I wanted to pass it on to you all...

Subject: Jury Duty Scam

This has been verified by the FBI (their link is also included below). Please pass this on. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo; your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud.

Thought you all needed to be warned! Scary stuff out there.

Happy New Year, and Biggest Hugs to All,
Wen

Hi I'm back again.

I had an appt with my eye Dr. yesterday at 4pm, but he didn't see me until 5pm, then he had to dialate my eyes, and that took time to work, and then he found a couple of problems so I didn't get home until 6pm!

I didn't think I was Ever going to get out of there!

Anyway, I don't like that feeling when they dialate your eyes... it always makes my eyes feel weird... like my eyes had been washed and waxed or something like that! LOL!

Well, I didn't get good news... he found 2 problems... 1. It looks like I have the start of Glucoma! (sp?) and 2. He found a spot that he couldn't explain elsewhere in the back of my eye, so he wants to watch it closely. He said at least it's a flat area, whatever that means?!

Scary stuff, the unknown. So I have to go back in 6 weeks to get it re-checked for him to see how things with the problems are going. At least he caught it early!

Don't know much about that weird spot tho? Maybe he can figure it out? Hope so anyway.

Anyway, I have to go back in 6 weeks to see how I'm doing. He said if the meds do not work, then there is always surgery, he said so calmly with out even a blink.

Here I'm freaking out and he's so calm and easy going, but then again, he does this for a living, so he'd better be confident about it! LOL!

I hope Everyone is having a Great Day!

Hugs to All,
Wen

HUGS Wen not nice of the eye dr to scare you like that. Although you have diabetes and diabetes can mess with your eyes (retinopathy) but I think if you get that, they can do a laser treatment and fix it. Anyway, good of you to get that stuff checked out. My eye doctor never does the dilation thing - I'm thinking of getting a new eye doctor. My dad has glaucoma, I'm pretty sure, and he just has to take eye drops for it (ok, they are sort of complicated eye drops with tricky timing, but he's an engineer and likes the challenge!) Anyway, HUGS and I hope he decides the eye stuff is okay. Maybe the eye stuff is related to the puffy leg stuff - you never know, body stuff can be all inter-connected!

One of my friends got a callback for her mammogram and she is totally freaking out about it! I told her it's pretty common for them to ask you back for a second look at something (at least it's common with me!) I don't know how they see anything at all on those mammograms, they are so grey and foggy and mysterious looking. Oh well, guess that's why they're radiologists and we're not! LOL!

Our jury duty always contacts us by mail, but I did read they are going to start a jury duty website, so you can change times or locations etc more easily, and I'm sure a lot of people find the mail confusing. If I didn't read it for Mr ML and tell him where to sign and to mail it back and mark when he had to go, I'm sure he never would have paid any attention to it!

Ugh, I suddenly have a really rotten cold! Came over me yesterday. Boy I haven't had a cold in ages and I can't say I've missed them! Eyes are all hot, nose all stuffy alternating with runny, sneezing my head off. Stupid colds!
I would have stayed home but it's so cold here, it's warmer to come to work (than in my house). It was ZERO degrees this morning, with a wind. That's cold.m But soo not in the mood for work today (cold and cold-y). whimper. Boss is driving me crazy updating various very similar policies and giving me back versions to revise that aren't the latest ones - soo typical of her. She's a wonderful doctor and a great administrator but this paperwork stuff sometimes isn't her best thing. ahem.

It's so weird, having absolutely nothing on TV for so many days. Nothing on til Friday (and then nothing on until NEXT Friday!) :> Mr ML's birthday is next week, I'd better get to work on it. Already have 2 gifts for him (I always put something away for him while I'm Hanukah and Christmas shopping). MLette's boyfriend's birthday is the same day - I have to think up something for him too. Maybe another gift card to a restaurant - the boy likes to eat. Then again - who doesn't?

Scottie - biscotti! LOL! Good resolution to chat with the dad. I have to remember to call mine regularly too. The time just slips away. I have the worst time calling my brother, because he's in California and the 3 hr time difference.
Whenever I think to call, then I realize they're asleep, or at work, or who knows, I always miss them when I call.

Mmm, brownies. I should bake some brownies. I baked these cookies my grandmother used to make, butter cookies, on New Year's Day, but they aren't going to last very long! The kids always want chocolate chip cookies, whenever I feel like baking, but I get tired of making the same thing over and over again.
It's the Aries thing - we like variety! Except in men of course - in men, we stick with JASON BEHR!

Boy it's cold - but it's supposed to warm up again by the weekend to nearly 60! Weird weird weird weather.

Aww, [Hugs] MyrnaLynne for your Cold. There really is never a good time for a Cold, but when the weather is cold and awful, it just makes it that much worse! Hope you are feeling better soon Sweetie.

Gosh, what a way to start the New Year eh?! Glaucoma and a Nasty Horrible Cold! Suppose it could be worse, but I certainly don't want to tempt the Fates!

Hope the rest of the JOF's and the JIT's are all Healthy!!! (finger's Crossed!)

Well, we're suppose to get hit with this Major Storm that's to last at least 4 days of high winds and torrential rains! Hope my roof holds up! If any kind of puddling goes on up there, then it tends to leak in my kitchen.

It's weird too, because it's been fixed at least 3 times now, and it still keeps doing the same thing! Leaks in the same spot! Grrrr! (sigh)

I like different kind of cookies too, but I totally agree with you MyrnaLynne about Men... Give me Jason Behr ANY DAY!!!

Speaking of Jason, Natalie posted some pictures of Jason from "Skinwalkers" on the Obsessies Thread and Man, are they YUMMY!!!

I sooo wish we also got the German Cut of the Movie as they got the "R" Rated Version, but we only got the PG-13 version so they cut out ALL of the Wild Love Making Scene in the Woods part. NO Bare Behr! (sigh) Not fair!

I guess (if I read right) that Dragon Wars is being released on the 8th of this month. I'll be ordering that. And I'd like to get The Tattooist if it ever comes available too.

I know I will NOT be ordering "Senseless" that's for sure! I would NEVER be able to stand to watch Jason get tortured thru'out an entire film!

I wish Jason would make a nice light-hearted romantic movie for a change... one that we don't have to watch from under our seats! (sigh)

Well, I'm off for now...

Hugs to All,
Wen

I think 'Frost' is the light romantic comedy we've been waiting for - unfortunately, we still have to wait for it and hope it comes out in the theater or on DVD or to a film festival nearby! It's opening in Utah at a film festival next week (!)

I get leaks in my kitchen ceiling too sometimes - luckily the worst leak drips into the washing machine! LOL! One time it was bad and I had pots and pans all around the room catching drips and it leaked in the front of the house too, on a corner of the living room. But as long as Mr ML keeps the gutters cleaned out, it's usually okay (crossing fingers).

It's been zero degrees here! Was zero last night, zero this morning, zero yesterday morning. But it's supposed to warm up again. Hope it happens soon!

Ooops, work is busy today... got to run!

ML - my gosh, we've got the same cold! I started to feel poorly around the first of Jan., thought I was getting a sore throat and now I can't breathe, I'm sneezing my head off and blowing my nose constantly. Grade A head cold! I hope your's goes away soon (and mine too!).

I know what you mean about television, I think I got so excited b/c I was finally back into watching the boob tube after so many years of reality shows and then came the writer's strike and now we're back to reality shows. The apprentice celebrity - yawn. Who's smarter than a 5th grader - yawn. Show with suitcases and models - yawn. Gimme a good scripted drama or Ugly Betty any day and I'm happy. I even watched a show the other day on Discovery channel about the refitting and sinking of a WWII aircraft carrier. it was so interesting! They succeeded in sinking it and turning it into an artificial reef in Florida. Cool stuff, but that's about it. There's nothing my hubby and I can watch together unless it's Iron Chef and if they start to cook platapus some day I'm outta there!

Wen - not to freak you out, but my first thought when you said the doctor said it was good that it was a flat spot on your eye was because you can actually get skin cancer on your eyeball! My sister had a melanoma on her chin in Nov 2006 and it was successfully removed (took a golfball sized hunk out of her chin though!). But since then she's had every square centimeter of her body checked for melanoma and one of the places they checked were here eyes! The opthamologist that she saw said that it's not uncommon to get melanomas on your eyes. EEK! So that's maybe a very good thing that your spot was flat. Hugs!!! Glad you got it checked out. And my boss lived with glaucoma for many years, they can control it (like ML said).

It's freezing here too! this morning it was 16 degrees which is a heckuvalot better than Boston it seems! Hope you don't have all that forecasted rain, Wen!

Maybe we'll see a movie this weekend, I'd like to see Charlie Wilson's War and see Shiri. We saw I Am Legend last weekend, enjoyed being scared, it wasn't too bloody. Will Smith rocks! You should see him do backwards chin ups! Yum!

Off to the Obsessie thread to lurk and drool over pictures. Mad that we got the tame version of Skinwalkers too.

to all my friends!

Good news, Scottie this cold moves very fast. Yesterday I realized I felt better again -also found out I'd given it to MLette. My mother always said the fastest way to get rid of a cold was to give it to somebody else! LOL! Luckily it just seems to be a head/nose cold and not go to the chest and turn into coughing.
Anyway, I feel a whole lot better again! Hope you get over it fast too! Bad bad cold and seems to be all over the place.

It was even freezing down in Florida - my dad was complaining about it and had to break out his winter clothing.

It's finally warming back up here (if you can call 25 warm, which you can compared to 0). It's supposed to almost hit 60 in a few ways though! Looking forward to that! Melting is going to be a mess though.

TV is pretty pathetic. I'm glad they are re-airing the Moonlights I missed seeing/taping first time around - next week is a new one, and a new Numbers too. sigh. They only have one more new one after that, unless they can get back into production though. Nobody had any idea this strike would drag on. I think the PTB are just going to outwait the writers and break their strike. I don't think they are going to negotiate, pay up, or settle.

Mr ML went to see I am Legend (by himself) and liked it. Probably too scary for me. I still want to see Enchanted and August Rush (Moonlight guy is J Rhys Myers brother). That's about it. Most of the movies don't appeal to me at all. Seeing Shiri is a reason to see Charlie Wilson's war although political historical stories don't really interest me, Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts notwithstanding.

I just bought the DVDs of Forever Knight - used to be a fan, have pretty much forgotten the whole series since it aired in the early 1990s. Don't know when I'll make time to watch them again but with nothing on TV, I might find the time now!
We just got the 'Fantastic Four' movie from Netflix - never saw that one, know it's terrible, but Ironing Board is in there (Ioan Gruffud) and Mr ML is a comic book guy. We're getting the sequel as our next movie too. After that it's a bunch of stuff I don't want to watch for awhile (Sopranos season 6, other stuff). sigh.

I might need to get a life if this writer's strike continues! Or take up writing!
