Hotbed To Shoot A Modern Fairy Tale in San Francisco
October 17, 2002 – San Francisco – Hotbed begins production this month on the feature-length motion picture Happily, Even After – a film with a mixture of comedy, romance and mystery. Cast members include Jason Behr (The Shipping News, Roswell, Pleasantville, Dawson’s Creek), Marina Black (Six Feet Under, Swordfish), Fay Masterson (Eyes Wide Shut, Man Without a Face, The Quick and The Dead) Michael Goorjian (SLC Punk!, Hard Rain, Party of Five, Leaving Las Vegas), and a cameo appearance by celebrated actor Ed Asner (Mary Tyler Moore, Lou Grant). Geoff Callan, (Frasier, Set It Off, Blackout) a 5th Generation San Franciscan, has also signed on to associate produce and appear in a character part.

The movie will be filmed entirely in and around San Francisco. Happily, Even After is a collaboration between award-winning writer Rebecca Sonnenshine and director Un Su Lee. In Sonnenshine’s story, an ad for a “fairy godmother” produces intriguing results. A genuinely mystical waitress arrives to help sort out a young man’s wayward and reckless life. This swirls off into a modern-day tale of love, destiny, and courage.

Happily, Even After is being created by an unprecedented cast and crew, spearheaded by producer Paul Barnett, who also co-produced Lynn Hershman Leeson's Teknolust, starring Tilda Swinton and Jeremy Davies. Teknolust premiered at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival and hits theaters across the country in November. Happily, Even After is scheduled for release in 2003.

“We’re excited that Happily, Even After follows hot on the heels of another film, Confessions of a Burning Man, that we’ve actually just wrapped. We’re looking forward to continuing the creative momentum,” states Hotbed executive producer Lily Ng. (Confessions of a Burning Man, is a feature-length documentary also from the Un Su Lee and Paul Barnett team, as co-producers/co-directors).

Director Un Su Lee co-founded San Francisco-based Hotbed in 1997. Since then, Hotbed has emerged as one of the most promising new companies in the entertainment industry, producing award-winning commercials, music videos, documentaries and feature films. According to Lee, “Hotbed’s mission is to utilize quality storytelling in all aspects of visual media. It’s a great honor and truly inspiring to realize Rebecca’s superb writing in a feature film.” Lee concludes, “Happily, Even After is as good as independent filmmaking gets. It’s going to be a great film not only for us, but also for the San Francisco Bay Area.”

The locals shoot

San Francisco's Hotbed Media, in collaboration with director Un Su Le, executive producer Lily Ng, producer Paul Barnett and actors Jason Behr ("The Shipping News" and "Pleasantville"), Marina Black (niece of Shirley Temple Black), Fay Masterson ("Eyes Wide Shut") and Michael Goorjian ("Leaving Las Vegas"), is producing a fairy tale story by award winning writer Rebecca Sonnenshine. Character parts are played by San Franciscans Geoff Callan ("Blackout"), Kimberly Newsom ("Blackout") and Simantha Weaver ("Confessions of a Burning Man"), with a cameo by Ed Asner. The film, "Happily Even After," is being produced entirely in the Bay Area. "The story, about a tight brother-sister relationship, shows what can happen by opening up and jumping out of the family casting," says Behr. "It's going to be a great film not only for us, but also for the San Francisco Bay Area."

November 6, 2002 - PRODUCTION IN FULL SWING
The Happily Even Crew works hard to shoot in over 35 locations in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. The only hiccup being the Hero Car, an old pick-up, stayed in character and broke down on the Bay Bridge. Nevertheless, the dailies indicate so far so good!

Greg Kalamar is featured in feature film, Happily Even After

San Francisco, California. November 10, 2002
Greg Kalamar recently completed work on a feature length motion picture — Happily Even After — to be released late 2003 or early 2004. The picture includes Greg's art (both canvases and sketches) and his influence. Greg acted as the lead actor's painting coach, and many of the pieces of art that the character creates in the film are actually Greg's work, including potentially some canvas close-ups of Greg painting a huge mural.

The lead character in this romantic comedy is an artist who is still haunted by the tragic death of his parents and struggles in his relationship with his controlling sister. Through the romantic twists in the story, Jake Singer, played by Jason Behr (Roswell, The Shipping News, Dawson's Creek, Pleasantville) regains his sense of purpose and self-confidence partly through creating art.

Happily Even After is directed by Un Su Lee, and produced by Hotbed Media, a San Francisco production company.

Thanks for starting a new thread, Vicki! I was hoping you were around - because you have all the stuff.

New Indiewire article - Tribeca Film Fest - 65 Films in Competition

Again - no "Happily, Even After" mention - must not be in competition. I liked this part -

"Organizers sifted through more than 3,300 submissions this year, up from about 2,400 last year. More than 150 feature films and 100 shorts will screen at this year's event. The Tribeca Film Festival will take place in Lower Manhattan, primarily in the TriBeCa neighborhood May 1-9."

I wonder if "Shooting Livien" will get into the fest next year since they seem to spotlight New York films.

Anyone want to take bets on whether Vicki says to her budget and shows up at the film festival?

Thanks for the thread start, O Moddess!

Hoodie: That would be if Livien was shown at next year's festival.

6th Rock: I'm impressed -- it seems to me you're always hopping in your car and bopping down to California, and I keep forgetting about the West Coast distances. On this side of the continent, I could hit about a half dozen states in only 2 hours of driving.

cherie: on all your reconnaisance for the film fest. Love all your Max/JB connections!

Yeah, we're a little more spaced out over here, Jackie!!! You know me, California's a second home to me. I know my way around the LA area pretty well, and I blend right in with all the other California drivers perfectly. I don't know the Bay Area as well, so it will be fun in Sonoma and Napa Valley. I wish I could manage to come out East for the Tribeca Film Festival, too. I spent a week in NYC about 4 years ago, and I just loved it. I really want to get back there again someday!

November 1, 2002 - San Francisco Chronicle

ACTING ADVICE FROM AN AUNT: Marina Black listened to her "Aunt Shirley's" advice about finishing college before attempting to break into show business. You'd listen, too, if your aunt were Shirley Temple.

"She thinks it's hard to do when you're young and that it can be frustrating to be an actor," said Black, who's managing quite well with a role as Lauren Ambrose's troublemaker friend on HBO's "Six Feet Under."

"They've assured me I'm not going to be killed off. That's always the biggest concern on a show where everybody dies."

Black is in San Francisco this month making "Happily, Even After" with "Dawson Creek's" Jason Behr. She plays a mystical waitress who helps sort out Behr's messy life. The day I spoke to Black, she had just completed a pivotal scene where her character signs on to be a fairy godmother. "But you're never sure if I really have supernatural abilities or if it's just coincidence that makes it look like I do."

November 1, 2002 - San Francisco Chronicle

ACHIEVERS: The Commonwealth Club celebrates its 99th anniversary Nov. 9 with a Fairmont dinner at which Ed Asner will present Nancy Pelosi with the club's Distinguished Citizen Award. Club President Gloria Duffy said Asner was chosen because he has used "his celebrity to improve the welfare of others." While the actor was in the Bay Area for the recent Mill Valley Film Festival, he shot a scene for the Hotbed Media-produced romantic comedy "Happily Even After" with his court 'n' camera-ready niece, Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom.

P.S. San Francisco-themed paintings by Kristin Nelson Tinker, who has major showbiz credentials -- she's the sister of Mark Harmon, used to be married to Ricky Nelson and was thereafter married to Mark Tinker, who is the son of Mary Tyler Moore's ex-husband -- are on show at Gump's until election day.

From Hoodie and thanks to gal25 for the tip!

I like seeing some press on the Tribeca Festival!

Tribeca Film Festival - Yahoo Movie News

Here's the article:
Quote:

De Niro Readies Next Tribeca Film Fest
Sunday March 7 5:55 PM ET

The third Tribeca Film Festival will screen 150 works on topics ranging from South African democracy to misery in a Brazilian prison, while celebrating lower Manhattan's rebirth after the terror attacks, actor Robert De Niro said.

"We felt we needed something to heal our neighborhood and our city," said De Niro, who co-founded the annual event in his lower Manhattan neighborhood.

This year's festival offers features, documentaries, shorts and major-studio premieres that last year drew 350,000 spectators who spent $47 million in the city. The festival will be held the first two weekends in May.

"There's a real sense of renewal and growth downtown," De Niro said at a news conference Friday at Silvercup Studios East in Queens, where he's shooting a new movie. It's also where the TV show "Sex & the City" was filmed.

And I second that motion, Liz, - here's hoping we see BTS stuff soon! Of course, since we got that Grudge video, I guess we shouldn't be greedy!

Thanks to gal25:

Happily Even After has been accepted into the Sonoma Film Festival.....

NEW! 2004 Film Festival Program

Happily Even After

Starring: Jason Behr, Fay Masterson & Marina Black

Since their parents’ death, Jake and Elizabeth Singer have become trapped in their respective roles as younger brother/older sister. Jake is a self-absorbed, directionless young man, while Elizabeth thinks she knows what’s best for him and tries to get him a new car, a new job and a new life. Jake sees these as superficial trappings; he’s more attached to his parents old house and his beloved truck, Wondergirl. Enter Katie, who is hired by Jake’s sister to shape him up and make his life better. Katie sees things more clearly than either of the siblings. Set (and shot beautifully) in San Francisco, the film is a meditation on fate and coincidence

Unsu Lee was born in Singapore, and studied film at the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. In 1997, she started Hotbed Media with fellow director Stokes McIntyre. Since then, he has directed numerous commercials, music videos, shorts, and the feature-length documentary Confessions of a Burning Man. Happily, Even After is his first narrative feature film.

Me too! I5 though downtown Seattle is similar to LA's freeways, so when I'm driving in LA I feel right at home. I should have moved to sunny Cali years ago.

Gavin Newsom's going to speak about that same-sex marriage thing at Thursday's $100-a-person Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund lunch in Washington, D.C. Proceeds are to go "to retire debt for the Newsom for Mayor campaign.''
Meanwhile, the seventh annual Sonoma Film Festival, which runs from April 1 to 4, is going to show "Happily Even After,'' a movie in which Kimberly Guilfoyle Newsom plays a public defender and her brother-in-law, Geoff Callan (he's married to Hilary Newsom Callan, and he's also associate producer of the film), plays a hipster businessman.

The filmmaker is Unsu Lee, and the movie's so new that the Tribeca Film Festival is calling its May showing of it a world premiere.

That makes the Sonoma showings, on April 2 and 3, pre-premieres. And if there's a reception after that, it'll be an after-pre-premiere party.

Well, you won't miss me if you listen to LTL little betting schemes!!!! I wish you could come, but I totally understand about the finanical situation. Hopefully, things will work out suddenly, and you'll find yourself with the money to make it!!!! Hmmmm . . . October for the Grudge? I'd have to check the timing on that. I'm going to Hawaii on the 30th for a week. I may not be able to make another trip so close to that, but we'll see.

You and me both!!! I remember one year, going to Cali so much, my co-workers wondered why I didn't just move there!!! I've been asking myself the same question. Especially with the lovely couple of days we've had here lately. One peak of Spring at the beginning of the week to tease us and then this wet mess.

I just checked out some of the other films being shown at the Sonoma Film Festival, and Colin is in one called 11:14, showing on Saturday at Noon. We should all try to check that one out, too! It sounds pretty interesting.
