Ok so I just got back from Aaron’s play. While it wasn’t the most amazing play I have ever seen, it was pretty good. First let me give you a bit of background on the Ventura Court Theatre as I was not prepared for what it was. This theatre is more of an actor’s studio. It seats maybe 100 people. There is a small stage and you are within 15 feet of the actors at all times. Pretty cool to be so close, there is only one drawback: while the show is open to the public, it is intended mostly for close friends and families. Cool unless you are the only groupie. I gotta tell you it was a bit awkward because everyone knew everyone and they didn’t know me so I couldn’t really lie and say I was with so and so. Anyhow on to the play: I do have to warn you I to am an actor, I look at pieces a bit differently than most (craft, skill, energy, “in the now”) that sort of thing.

Sir Aaron does have acting skills (not as good as J, but pretty good) the first scene starts out with A doing this ridiculous dance drinking beer in his dumpy apartment. He is a down on his luck no good bad boy from Brooklyn. (Great job with the accent) He is dancing to bongo drum music. As the beat gets faster, Aarons dance gets crazier, he goes through many beers, throwing them at the wall once he has polished them off and ending up only in boxers and a wife beater. (This I is the most clothed he is for the rest of the play). His girlfriend pounds on the door yelling “Tommy open the ********** door! The two then argue for the rest of the act about how messed up he is. He’s sleeping with her 16 year old sister, painted a scary picture of himself, drinking all the time. The kinda have this I hate you but I love you attitude. So they scream and make out and scream and make out. At one point Aaron is in only boxers humping the fridge. (Sound confusing yet??) The girl has an idea about how to fix everything- go to her father. If she tells him all that is going on he can fix it or just beat Tommy up. There is a weird transition between act 1 and act 2 where Aaron is doing a monologue in the fridge. Not sure but he has a “break though” without actually learning anything new. That’s one of his lines. Anyhow act 2 is between the girl and her father about how good the sex is with Tommy and she loves him even though he’s a jerk to her. She thinks she has found him because he is just like her father. Though their awkward dialogue, you find out that her mom is dead and daddy is a drunk who cheated on mom. She persuades dad to go talk sense into Tommy or beat him up, dad goes along with it. Act 3 is the confrontation between a tuxedo wearing dad and Tommy (in boxers). They have a heart to heart and Tommy realizes that he loves the girl and she barges in wearing a wedding dress. Dad sits Tommy down in a chair, puts his jacket on him and sits his daughter on his lap. Then he ties the two of them to the chair. End of play.

Kinda weird. But fun. I know I’ve been a little harsh but the acting was really good, just a weird script. They were funny and soulful. I tried to snap some sneaky pictures but it isn’t digital so I’ll need to develop them and see if they come out good enough to post. It was fun seeing a Behr boy in person. While he doesn’t look much like J he does have that same soft spoken sort of voice that J has. I enjoyed watching him; I’d go see another play of his. Oh btw, who is Ruth Behr? She was supposed to sit by me but never showed up (they were pre-arranged seats). Anyhow, if the pictures turn out I’ll post them ASAP.
