Paul Woodrugh (True Detective) Appreciation Thread #7: Because We Get The World We Deserve

Welcome to Paul Woodrugh {True Detective} appreciation thread

Premieres Sunday, June 21st on HBO

Season 2 of “True Detective” will focus on three police officers and a career criminal navigating a web of conspiracy in the aftermath of a murder.
Paul Woodrugh, a handsome, 28-year-old military veteran who has seen his own share of violence and destruction. He will be a very different sort of cop - a man running from a difficult past and from 'a scandal that never happened.' He’s a motorcycle California Highway Patrol officer who’s put on leave after soliciting oral sex from a beautiful girl he pulls over for drunk driving. He reports to Commander Floyd Heschmeyer and has a Latino girlfriend he breaks up with when he’s assigned to the Caspar investigation.

Quote:
A bizarre murder brings together three law-enforcement officers and a career criminal, each of whom must navigate a web of conspiracy and betrayal in the scorched landscapes of California. Colin Farrell is Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective in the all-industrial City of Vinci, LA County. Vince Vaughn plays Frank Semyon, a criminal and entrepreneur in danger of losing his life’s work, while his wife and closest ally (Kelly Reilly), struggles with his choices and her own. Rachel McAdams is Ani Bezzerides, a Ventura County Sheriff’s detective often at odds with the system she serves, while Taylor Kitsch plays Paul Woodrugh, a war veteran and motorcycle cop for the California Highway Patrol who discovers a crime scene which triggers an investigation involving three law enforcement groups, multiple criminal collusions, and billions of dollars.

I remember being so nervous for the premiere, it had been almost a year since we'd seen him in anything new to that point.

With his new projects I don't think I'll be really nervous until Waco.

When did it premiere? I thought I watched it when it aired, but behind, but it was in like January that I started TD. And only because I was talking about FNL and one of my colleagues said, "You know the guy who plays Tim Riggins is in the new True Detective."

It premiered in late June 2015 and aired through August. I think it was season one that had a winter release date that was around January 2014.

Season one definitely aired during the winter months because I remember people being pissed that season 2 wouldn't be out that following winter but not until the summer. And that was still a rush.

Had no idea that Rachel and Taylor shared an acting coach.

Wow, so maybe they really were friends for years before TD, through Sheila.

I don't think I even knew he was in it until late April, or early May, when I would've first seen the ad on HBO. I didn't follow him or his projects at all online back then anyway, but I wasn't paying attention at all to TD news because I hadn't watched the first season yet and didn't want spoilers.

I don't know about friends but a possibility that they had met or run in the same circle. I had no idea they shared a coach. Taylor is still close with Sheila, she was at The Normal Heart premiere in New York.

There was an instance where someone asked him about his involvement with TD, prior to it being confirmed, and they asked him about Rachel's involvement as well and he gave some answer that kind of implied that he might have talked to her. I just remember it being a strange answer, like he indirectly confirmed that he'd had contact with her when he couldn't confirm that they were actually both working on the project.

I thought he had said they were friends prior to TD.

Well... now you have to find that interview bc it sounds adorably awkward.

I'd have to find it. I want to say it was at the GQ red carpet, when he was honored with Joshua Jackson and Andrew Garfield.

So for whatever reason this fight between the two of them is maybe one of my favorite scenes. When he's all "oh **** off" it just seems so genuine.

That one, and the one where he flips out at his mother are great. I just wish he got to show more than anger and resentment as Paul. But then again, maybe that's all there was to him.

That fight scene is my favorite of all his scenes with her.

Ever notice that when he's playing angry at someone, he always leans far into them and juts out his jaw a bit? The most recent is in the AA trailer when he says "Where's the new me?!" I bet he does it in real life when he's arguing. It just seems instinctual. I'm trying to recall a scene when/if he ever did it as Riggins but I'm not picturing one. I guess because Riggins didn't get furious very often.
