Friday Night Lights OT Thread #18: Because Texas Forever

The all encompassing Friday Night Lights thread to discuss any and all actors from the show and just the show in general because even though it's been 10-years since it premiered it remains one of the most beloved shows out there. And even we sometimes have to admit the show was about more than just Tim Riggins.

"Inspired by the legendary Buzz Bissinger book Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, and the 2004 Peter Berg movie based on it, FNL told the story of a high school football coach from Dillon, Texas, whose improbable victories mirrored those of the critically beloved — but disastrously rated — show itself. In an era when sports television was supposedly at its nadir, when elite storytelling was supposedly only the work of prestige outlets like HBO and AMC, Friday Night Lights emerged as the quintessential show about American spirit and uplift at a time when the moral and economic bedrock of our Country seemed most in doubt.

Gone too soon. Appreciated too little. Treasured by those who followed it. That was Friday Night Lights." -Grantland

I read the book way back when, it was interesting. I think I read it after watching at least the first season of FNL back and all I could think was that the way they portrayed Odessa in the book was far more rural than Dillon ever appeared. Though I've never been to Odessa to know if that's true.

Did I see that the FNL book was banned somewhere?

I read it years ago too and honestly the book banning is completely out of control in this country . It just takes a person or a group to find something offensive and then they feel empowered to make sure no one else can read it. I’ve told my kids to read anything that’s being banned because chances are there is something in the book that you should know or learn from.

That’s the link I posted. Pete posted an article about it being banned on IG.

I am, with very few exceptions, in general against the banning of books. Let people decide what they want to read

Maybe I will read the book now that I have plenty of time.

One of my first students was a sports newscaster in Odessa for a few years. Now he's in Cincinnati.

It’s a pretty easy read and being a fan of the show you should absolutely read it. I think I might’ve listened to it as an audiobook during one of our cross country moves.

What this country is becoming is reminding me more and more of George Orwell's "1984". Big brother is watching you. Bet they'll never ban that book though. I should go back and reread it. The books in high school we were forced to read, I never had an interest in at that time. I've never been much of a reader. I'd rather watch it and go on my way. Now that I'm older, I'd like to reread "1984" & "Lord of the Flies". We had to read those plus Pet Cemetery, Salem's Lot, To Kill a Mockingbird and I don't remember what else.

My oldest is going to read To Kill a Mockingbird and Of Mice and Men this year. She’s not thrilled about it but I’m excited for her to read the classics for the first time. I hope she enjoys and appreciates them.

I saw something written, that paraphrased, said a parent can choose for her child what is best, but she cannot make that decision for everyone else. I completely agree.

To Kill a Mockingbird is my favorite book of all time. And we know how Tim Riggins feels about Of Mice and Men.

To Kill a Mockingbird was definitely my favorite growing up. I took American Classics in high school my senior year and the number of books that we read that are now banned, I know Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five is banned in some places, that's one of the books that always stands out most to me that I remember reading during that time.

Football season is almost here (well kind of already is)! Which definitely means that I'm in the mood for an FNL rewatch.

I always get the urge to rewatch in the fall too but I never get around to it. Maybe with the strike and lack of content I will finally do it.

I've been saying this has been the longest I've gone without a rewatch of it, maybe a few years even. So I might have to do the rewatch...

Y'all! Did you see Pete's reel about Salt Lick BBQ!?!?!?! ABORT! ABORT! DO NOT eat there! It is NOT good eats, I do not care watch TV show you have watched that might convince you otherwise. It's a place for Yankee tourists. No self respecting Texan would dare recommend it. Just say NO!
