I still see tweets like this every week. Looking back on it the marketing was horrible, but it is a really difficult movie to market as well, Sony had a lot to juggle, came in late to the game, real story that happened very recently, really had a lot of heart which is always hard to capture in short trailers.

I genuinely thought it was going to be a hit, or at least win opening weekend! I didn't realize it only made $23 million total. Yikes. That Forbes article had a good point about audiences maybe seeing it as "just" another real-life story with a tragic ending. Also, the trailer and ads leaned so heavily on patriotism, maybe politics kept people away? Everyone just seems to want escapism these days. And I guess it's also true that there weren't any megastars in it. I mean I personally see Josh Brolin, Jennifer Connelly and Jeff Bridges as big stars, but maybe the average filmgoer doesn't.

I almost thought there might not have been enough patriotism, at least not the right kind. That was what made Lone Survivor such a hit and surpass it's early expectations. But Marcus Luttrell was also a war hero and had a very successful book that already had an audience. You wait another ten or even five years and maybe the story would resonate with more than just the Arizona community.
I also think the fact that it came out when wild fires were raging did not help. These are the kind of movies that need to be marketed very carefully. The campaign they attempted to put together just didn't resonate with the audience that it should have. |

We were under a "red flag warning" today, I had no idea what it was and actually had to look it up. Basically you couldn't do any outdoor burning today because we were at a high risk of fire spreading because of high winds the right humidity and high temperatures. I never remember this being a thing here, I've lived in Michigan my entire life. It was strange.

I know we've had burn bans before, I'd just never heard it referred to as a red flag warning. And usually they're later in the summer if we're having a dry summer.

I just noticed that iTunes has the movie on sale for $9.99. It's on the home page. And btw, AA is the movie rental of the week, at 99 cents.

I had to google it, I guess it's an official warning.
