Hooligans (Matthew and Evi) #9: Because Evi is a Foxy fangirl, too.

Matthew & Evangeline Appreciation Thread

“… WHEN SHE OPENS THE BIGGEST SMILE OF THE WORLD AND SAID: ”He’s fine. I WILL SEND YOUR KISS TO HIM SOON.”

His mouth was straight. Eyes dimmed. Then, all at once, his face lit up as his co-star, Evangeline Lilly,
climbed the metal steps to his trailer. Now Lilly stepped inside Fox's trailer, reaching out to him with one hand,
palm up, displaying two fun-size candy bars. 'Awww, that's perfect,' Fox said. Lilly opened her
other hand, revealing something else, a chocolate covered berry.
Fox plucked a berry from her palm and popped it into his mouth.

"Of all the challenging aspects of Matthew Fox’s career, having to pretend to be attracted to Lilly must be the toughest?

MF: Oh God yeah, it’s almost too much to bear. You have to try to do your job, but that’s the one thing I’ve found
almost impossible,” he laughs. “She is absolutely beautiful, and obviously the Jack and Kate relationship is one that I like a lot.”

""We have a good time because we know there is a l o v e there. There's a commitment to each other."

"Still, she says, she wasn't sure she had made the right decision
until she met her co-star, Matthew Fox."

"I just call her Evi. I've some other nicknames that I can't say."

Quotes

~Evangeline: I think our real fans aren't really looking for sex. Before we start shooting, me an Matthew discussed it, and we agreed on it. Sex is the last thing on your mind after you crash. You're so busy collecting food, making shelters that you don't even notice that there's a hot guy next to you but at the same time, the characters feel at ease, and it's really normal that people feel like having sex.

What do you and Dom do when you're not filming?
~Evangeline: Well, never in a million years did I imagine I would ever attempt to go surfing but I tried it for the first time a few days ago, right in Matthew's (Fox) backyard.

~Interviewer: So tell us - what's the gorgeous Matthew Fox really like?
~Evangeline: Matthew's like a father - he takes care of us kids! I'm always bugging him about his age and telling him he's an old man, but you can see he's a father, because he's got an instinct to take care of people. I think people who've never had a child are more likely to see the world through just their owns eyes. Whereas someone who's a father or mother is more likely to be aware of other peoples feelings.

~Matthew:
I knew that [Lost and Alias executive producer] JJ Abrams had such a fantastic track record that I wasn't concerned at all. The kind of confidence and poise that she has exhibited is remarkable.

~Matthew: Evi is incredibly charming, and she's fun to be around.
~Matthew: We've got some smokin' girls in this cast!
~Matthew: One of the things Evangeline has handled so amazingly is the pressure of the whole thing. I just want to help her in any way I can and make sure nobody is getting in the way of it.

~Evangeline: He's [Fox] like a big brother. He took me under his wing.
~Evangeline: We call him Foxy because he is
~Evangeline: He's so handsome, so dashing and debonair.
~Evangeline: He's matured beautifully.

~Matthew: Evangeline is so beautiful, that sometimes I found it really hard to concentrate on my job around her.

~Evangeline: Matthew is a fantastic actor. He's absolutely one of my teachers and mentors on set¦ I think that's one of the reasons why Matthew and I have such natural chemistry on screen, is that I am genuinely very taken by him when he's acting. He is a very captivating actor and I think Kate is supposed to be captivated by Jack.

~Evangeline:
I also challenged Matthew Fox to a push-up contest. I said, 'If you're gonna be my hero on the show, prove you can be

It's no surprise that many of Fox's fellow cast members, such as Evangeline Lilly... look to him as a kind of father figure, albeit a fun one. Lilly has revealed that, as well as helping her with her acting, Fox loves to take the piss out of her
Evangeline said handsome co-star Matthew Fox who plays Dr Jack thinks "I'm weird because three or four times we've been filming in the bushes and I've relieved myself within 15 feet of him.
"I'm like 'OK, I have about 30 seconds before they call action and I gotta pee - I'm goin'!'"

~Evangeline: My first day on the set was with Matthew Fox and Dominic Monaghan. We had an instant connection, the three of us, and became instant buddies. We had an amazing time filming the pilot together and are very close.

~Evangeline: Matt & Josh are great! I absolutely love them. They're like my brothers. I adore them, absolutely adore them. They're both gentlemen.

~Interviewer: Your co-star Evangeline Lilly told us that you like different things - skinny dipping ! In front of the whole crew !
~Foxy: She told you ? Alright... Tell Evi I do it just for her.
I'm very sure Evi doesn't feel embarrassed about it anymore. It is a very closing-together experience And we need this very much for the filming.
In the shadow of a crooked tree, Matthew Fox (Jack) and Evangeline Lilly (Kate) bat away hungry gnats dive-bombing their glistening skin

~Evangeline: I noticed, they (writers) watch who connects in real life, on the cast
and the next thing you know, two people who become really good friends in real life suddenly on the show they connect.

~Evangeline: For example, Matthew Fox and I had a lot of conversations at the beginning of the show about how we felt about this blooming romance that you saw in the pilot, and both of us agreed that if you were to take a real-life scenario and we were dealing with the plane crash, the monster or whatever it was, survival and all of the factors that we had to face, that romance wouldn't even occur to us for at least the first, what, month?

~Evangeline: All the time, everyday. I'm the type of person who, when I'm working in the jungle with Matthew Fox, will just crouch beside a bush three feet away and take a pee.

~Evangeline: I'm glad they didn't make Jack die in the pilot. and I'm honored to work with Matthew Fox!

~Evangeline: Matthew Fox was really pivotal for me at the beginning. I have a hard time when people tell me what to do and when people assume I don't know things. I am kind of headstrong and have pride issues. He was really gentle about his way of leading me, it was always very subtle and well-intentioned. If he was ever able to guide me, it was usually done by example or it was situational, or it was him protecting me when I didn't even realize what he was doing. I learned from him that you should bare yourself in front of the camera and in front of your fellow actors. I learned about the absolute trust you must have with your fellow actors. Matthew completely opened up for me as soon as they called action.

~Evangeline:
"He's a total nudist, He has a really bad habit of taking his clothes off and skinny-dipping in front of the whole cast, I was there the very first time it happened" ...

~Matthew: Thats right the show got nominated and I believe Evie got nominated as well which is good. We're..we're all really happy.
You guys are on a deserted tropical island full of drop death gorgeous people, don't you think the viewers expect more sex?

~Evangeline: I think our real fans aren't really looking for sex. Before we start shooting, me an Matthew discussed it, and we agreed on it. Sex is the last thing on your mind after you crash. You're so busy collecting food, making shelters that you don't even notice that there's a hot guy next to you but at the same time, the characters feel at ease, and it's really normal that people feel like having sex

According to Lilly, Fox tells her something different. Between takes on location, she'll shinny up a vine or maybe eat a slug on a dare, at which point she will receive a steely Fox gaze:
~Evangeline: "He's constantly looking at me and saying, 'Evie, do you realize you're really weird?' And then he'll just walk away”

~Evangeline:
"He'll often turn to me with a hilarious expression of utter confusion and say, "You are weird." He's a real buddy; we take the piss out of each other."

Lets just cut the crap. What it it like to kiss Matthew Fox?
~Evangeline: Well a Lady never kisses and tells.

With her new bra Foxy has said he doubled her cleavage.

~Matthew: Evi always had a problem with the SiFi part of the show, you know.
I think its -- pretty cute. She's euh- Euhm.
We've always disagreed, in a nice way over that. I think its great."

~Evangeline: "Honestly, probably the biggest sigh of relief was when I first met Matthew. He seemed so uninterested in me, like absolutely unfazed that we were meeting," she laughs. " He was like 'Oh,yeah,OK,hi,' and he just moved on with his conversation he was in the middle of. I just took that as a wonderful sign that he and I were going to be able to be on a really comfortable level with one another. There wasn't going to be any cheesy Hollywood fakeness or superficiality in our relationship. The second most encouraging thing when I met him was to find out that he was happily married with two children, because I think when you are playing romantic leads in a television show together, you always run the risk that real emotions might get involved and come into play. Finding out that he was happily married was so reassuring to me, because I was far from interested in having that very awkward dynamic come into play with my leading man."

~Matthew: Evangeline.... She's... She's wonderful, she's a wonderful girl and she's been through uh, I think it's been a very interesting experience for her because she'd never really acted before. And you know, I've been doing this for 17 years and I've had sort of different levels of successes that I've gone along and for her to go from not having done any work at all and never having the experience with the business to just be thrust into this situation, in her first job... I can only imagine the challenges she's had and it's been difficult for her at times. But I think she's handled it very well and... We get along great, we get along very, very well and I enjoy working with her, I enjoy that relationship a great deal. It's very, you know, push and pull and it's an interesting dynamic between these two characters and I think we enjoy the opportunities that we get on the show to take that relationship towards its natural conclusion... um, whatever that may be. So it's been good, it's been really good.

~Interviewer: "Of all the challenging aspects of Matthew Fox’s career, having to pretend to be attracted to Lilly must be the toughest?
~Matthew: Oh God yeah, it’s almost too much to bear. You have to try to do your job, but that’s the one thing I’ve found almost impossible,” he laughs. “She is absolutely beautiful, and obviously the Jack and Kate relationship is one that I like a lot.

~Evangeline: They couldn't be more different. Josh & Matthew are polar opposites. Which makes it much more easier because I've to love them in different ways on the show.
Kate has to be very connected but very differently.
Matthew & I have, I think, a much more professional relationship in the way that we actually address a scene.
I mean, we couldn't be more goofy and silly and laughing when we're not rolling.
We have a really good time joking around together.
And I think when it comes down to the scenes he's much more of a dedicated, applied, surreal artist.
He wants to break the scene down into it's elements and parts and make sure it adds its very essence.
We are both in line and on the same page with what we're going to accomplish or at least on what we're going to attempt to feel.
I don't think Matthew ever has an end vision in mind. Like this is whats its gonna look like. He knows what he wants it to feel like.
Matthew challenges me all the time to be less lazy as an actor. He demands that I work as hard as he does.
His attitude is if I'm gonna put in a 150% then so are you.
And so what he has made me realize is that I can't be very lazy as an actor,
that I don't want to go there. It's too much work, it's too much pain. It's so hard, but it's so rewarding when you do. And that's what he's taught me.

~Kimmel: Evangeline said she got the drunkest out of anyone in the cast. Is that true?
Foxy: That is absolutely true.
Kimmel: That is accurate?
Foxy: I ended up having to take care of her.
Kimmel: Did you really?
Foxy: Yeah, a little bit.
Kimmel: Wow, just like the show.
[B]Foxy:[/B ]Yeah.
Kimmel: You had to carry her to the trailer?
Foxy: Yeah, I did. She end up sleeping in her trailer that night, i had to kinda get her in there and ... yeah.. it was a little ugly.

~Evangeline: We all like to know whats going on.
~Matthew: I'll tell you later Evi.

~Evangeline: I have to savor that for every single day that I'm here.
For every single day that I'm on set.
Every single day that I get to be working with Matthew Fox cause without him,
Its gonna be damaging.
~Matthew: Aw. Thats sweet... Damaging?

~Dominic:We all went to the Golden Globes. You know, myself, Evangeline, Jorge, Ian, Maggie,..
Evangeline: ..Matthew..
Dominic: No Matthew actually didn't go.
Evangeline: Oh yeah cause his wife.... Right...
Interviewer: Because of his marriage?
Evangeline: [Laughs]

What did Matthews wife think of the Jack & Kate kiss?
~Evangeline: I wouldn't know. It was the last time we spoke. [Laughs]

~Evangeline: Man. I hurtled my hand the other day when Matthew and I did a photoshoot in the jungle together.

~Matthew: I warned her for the consequences of her relationship with Dominic. Things don’t get easier when you start a relationship with a co-star. But Evi is Evi and she wouldn’t listen.

~Matthew: Euhm. They got a lot to do. They got alot left to tell in the Jack&Kate story.
Its gonna be really. I mean, honestly its been 4/5 years that we've been doing this
and I'm really looking forward to see how its all gonna end and wether or not they are gonna,
sort of, end up together in some way that means something lasting.
I'm really just curious to see what the story is gonna do.

Q: Whats it like to kiss Matthew Fox?
~Evangeline: "Well a lady never kisses and tells, but, um, I love working with Matt he is... You know we've been to... we've been working together now for five years so he's become such a, a dear friend of mine. You know I... it sounds cliche but he's like my brother. You know, we care about each other and we care for each other and I think we're very intent on set on making sure that we always have a dynamic of communication and openness and vulnerability so that we can achieve what we need to achieve on camera."

Reporter (R): This show is one of the biggest hits of the year. Everybody's talking about it. How do you deal with this level of fame?

MATTHEW FOX: I feel great and I'm having a lot of fun. This is the most fun I've had working. And I'm very surprised to see this phenomenon grow to such an extent with such speed. I've always known that the show is amazing and that it would be a big hit, but I'm not used to this kind of... I think when Party of Five was at the height of its popularity, we had 10 million viewers each week. And now we have 22 million people watching our show, so this is taking things to a whole new level that I'm not used to and...

EVANGELINE LILLY:
And yet, Matthew is handling it like a real pro. On screen, he's a sort of natural leader. Actually, he's the same undisputed leader for all of us in real life as well. I think Matthew has absorbed a big part of the impact this show has had on all of us... you know, the media and all this attention focused on us, and he's been acting with such calm, you'd think he's been in 20 shows like this before. I know we all have a lot to learn by watching him.

R: How does it feel to go from being relatively unknown to being involved in a show this big?

EVANGELINE LILLY: I'm just watching this guy. I think you need to take a step back from something to get a better grasp of what's happening to you. I keep saying it's like watching your hair grow and one day you end up asking yourself: "Hey, when did my hair get so long?" That's how it is for me. Every three months I end up asking myself "When did my life change so much and how did this happen?" And it doesn't hit you on a daily basis because we're shooting in Hawaii. And it's not a 9 to 5 job; we work from 5 am to 10 pm, we wake up to go to work every day and we try to do our best, same way you do. And then all of a sudden you see people coming up to you, recognizing you, telling you how much they appreciate the work you're doing. It's only then that you finally understand what it's like to have 20 million people watching your work. We don't just do it for us. We love this show so much, and we love acting and being part of this cast and working hard every day, that I think we're starting to forget the business aspect of our work.

R: The cast spends a lot of time away from home. Do you spend time together?

EVANGELINE LILLY: Absolutely. The cast is our social circle. We hang out on Wednesday nights, we have lunch together and then we watch the show. All of us with our families and our partners. In America people talk about this, they have what they call "Lost parties" where they come together with friends families and so on and they watch the show. Well, we have Lost parties too, only ours are huge. We have about 25 people coming over, the whole cast with friends and families. So it's great.

R: It certainly looks that way. I mean, it's obvious you're enjoying it, but I was wondering if Matt finds it harder to live on an island?

EVANGELINE LILLY: Maybe he does. I can't speak for him. But I know I miss home just as much.

R: Are you both going to be doing movies during the break?

MATTHEW FOX: I think we're both looking. Evie's looking for a project as well. This show is a springboard in television for a lot us. It has a visual appeal. It has a cinematic feel to it. So the movie industry is paying attention to Lost, not just because of its success, for the ratings, but also because it would make a better movie than say, CSI, which is a very technical show. There's an openness to Lost and the type of cinematographic technique that the movie industry is very interested in. [I'm not sure Matt actually said that they want to make a movie out of Lost, just that it's very cinematic.] Actually, a lot of famous directors are interested in directing an episode of Lost because it's a unique opportunity for them.
EVANGELINE LILLY: We're very fortunate.

R: What type of projects are you looking for? I mean... characters that resemble the ones you play"Lost"?

MATTHEW FOX: You know, it's how things go in this business; I'm probably going to attract offers for leader-type characters.
EVANGELINE LILLY: A hero.
MATTHEW FOX: A hero of sorts. I think... I have the feeling that I'm about to succeed at the right time, in a way. Obviously, there are a lot of things you have to consider. It takes a lot of luck and perfect timing.
EVANGELINE LILLY: There are actors like Robert De Niro and you know... other actors in your age group, right?
MATTHEW FOX: She's always teasing me about my age.

Amidst the flames and panic of the crashed remains of the Oceanic Flight 815 on Lost, there quickly emerged a duo that would evolve into the unofficial leaders of the initial 48 survivors: Jack (Matthew Fox), the upstanding and brave doctor that administered to the injured and those in peril from the moment he walked onto the wreckage strewn beach, and Kate (Evangeline Lilly), the guarded and calculating young woman that had hand-stitched a nasty gash on Jack’s back, immediately forging a bond between the two. Fate has a funny sense of humour though, and while Jack and Kate initially appeared to be kindred spirits of integrity and empathy, it soon became clear this was anything but the case. Sure, Jack was pretty much the all-American real deal, but Kate was a whole other story. A fugitive from justice with a wickedly deceptive past, the seeming good girl was far more of a bad girl. As the season progressed and more about Kate’s past was unearthed, Jack was increasingly more disturbed to find out how dissimilar they were. Yet they retain a connection that crackles with chemistry.

For actors Matthew Fox and Evangeline Lilly, that strong connection – despite their obvious differences – applies to their real live worlds too. Fox is a television veteran of shows like Party of Five and Haunted, while Lilly was an acting unknown when she first stepped onto the sands of Hawaii to shoot the Lost pilot. Fox is a married father with two children, while Lilly is single and still in her 20’s. He’s Wyoming born and bred, while she’s Canadian. Yet for all their differences, Fox and Lilly have crafted an on-screen pairing that’s been electric for audiences to watch and root for over the past year. You can’t explain chemistry, but the pair were more than happy to spend some time with Lost Magazine to dissect their working relationships and talk about the highlights of their incredible, whirlwind first season on Lost.

Yet Lilly says it was Fox who helped her settle into the show so quickly, by basically brushing her off. "Honestly, probably the biggest sigh of relief was when I first met Matthew. He seemed so uninterested in me, like absolutely unfazed that we were meeting,” she laughs. “He was like, ‘Oh, yeah, OK, hi,’ and he just moved on with his conversation he was in the middle of. I just took that as a wonderful sign that he and I were going to be able to be on a really comfortable level with one another. There wasn’t going to be any cheesy Hollywood fakeness or superficiality in our relationship. The second most encouraging thing when I met him was to find out he was happily married with two children, because I think when you are playing romantic leads in a television show together, you always run the risk that real emotions might get involved and come into play. Finding out he was happily married was so reassuring to me, because I was far from interested in having that very awkward dynamic come into play with the leading man.
Matthew [Fox] has taught me so much about being absolutely laid bare in front of the camera."

Of Fox, in particular, she continues, "I do think that Matthew and I have very different styles. Matthew is a fantastic actor. He’s absolutely one of my teachers and mentors on set, as far as acting is concerned. He takes the art of acting and he truly epitomizes that side of it. There are the mechanics of acting and the art of acting and he’s all about the art and in that way, he bears his soul when he acts. As soon as they call, ‘Action!’ the guy opens up like a cocoon and you see what’s inside of him. When I was in that sew-up scene, I was so taken aback by him and this raw vulnerability that he showed, and what he was doing in the performance that he was giving, that it hindered me. I felt totally unable to meet him at that level! I did probably 50 takes of my coverage in that scene and couldn’t nail it! I just couldn’t get it. We had to come back a few weeks later and re-shoot the scene after I had acted with Matthew a little longer and had a rapport with him, and found a groove with him, and then I was able to do the scene."
"One of the things I’ve noticed working with all these actors, is that not only do they have different acting styles, but how drastically those acting styles rub off on you as an actor and how they affect your performance," Lilly continues enthusiastically. "I think that’s one of the reasons why Matthew and I have such natural chemistry onscreen, is that I am genuinely very taken by him when he is acting. He is a very captivating actor and I think Kate is supposed to be captivated by Jack."

Speaking about Lilly, Fox is humble about his support of his leading lady. "If you are in the position that I am in on the show, and your female co-star has never really done much, you are going to definitely want to make her feel comfortable and relaxed. You do everything you can to make it fun and take a lot of the pressure off. One of the things Evangeline has handled so amazingly is the pressure of the whole thing. To be in that position without ever having experienced it on this scale takes a lot of courage and a lot of poise. She’s always handled it quite well, and I just want to help her in any way I can and make sure nobody is getting in the way of it. Acting is ultimately like a dance and takes two people. One of the things that everybody on Lost understands is about this process is that it takes a great amount of trust. When it works well, it requires both people to be participating – sort of ‘feeling the other person out’ through the process. It’s something you need to be conscious of – that you have to be connected."

Asked what she thought was Matthew Fox’s best moment, Lilly smiles and says, "I think that Matthew’s had some pretty spectacular moments to choose from. Probably the place where I saw some of his most incredible work was the entire amputation sequence of Boone’s dying moments. He was just so desperate to save his life, and that entire event took place at the exact same moment that Kate was forced to deliver Claire’s baby in the jungle. That type of simultaneous action is one of my favourite things about Lost. That episode was quite spectacular and so momentous for the show, having the death, the birth and the crisis. I thought Matthew shone so brightly in that episode and showed so much darkness and depth. For me, it was so much fun to have Kate do something on her own. I loved playing that moment where I sit down and Jack looks so disturbed, and Kate comes out and looks so redeemed. She just glows when she sits down and says, ‘How was your night? Are you ok?’ it’s always the other way around, with her in this dark place, so I really enjoyed this role reversal."
In accord, Fox agrees that was his favorite Evangeline moment. "She handled the birthing of the baby really well and was really committed to that. You felt her reticence to get attached and involved on that kind of intimate level with somebody, and yet when she went there, she was really there. It was very strong work."

"I enjoy working with Evi a lot and we have a really good time. We really do.
We tease each other an awful lot, and make fun of each other and call
each other out on things constantly, being really honest with each other,
but in a light and humorous way. So no, we've really enjoyed this. It's been good."

Yes. I'm looking forward to seeing if Evi posts anything on that day. I hope we get a few articles commemorating it, too.

Evangeline Lilly liked my Jate photo on my Matthew Instagram account! I didn't even tag her name! That means Evi searches the Jate tag on her own!
