If I'm not wrong, it was because he didn't want to spend too much time filming and apart from his family, he went through that while filming Lost

I can understand that, it is also difficult sometimes to find another hit, people tend to type cast actors in roles.

Well, he wasn't exactly in a break for all these years because he made some movies. I think he's just waiting for something in tv or movies that is good for him but he's more like "if it comes, good. If not, good too." basically, the man is happy with his family, working in something else, while a good offer comes.
