ETA: i think i know why there havent really been articles written about Taylor's Platinum status. Fearless is double platunum but i'm wondering if its been RIAA certified. I know that Carrie's Carnival Ride was certified Gold, platinum and Double platinum on the same day. So idk how all that works but i thought i'd put that out there for ya'll

ETA again: good news for ya'll Taylor might reach 3x soon. there are some different certifications... I was a little confused as to how the whole RIAA certification worked and I found this. it mentions Carrie but can be applied to everyone i just found it on a Carrie site.

The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is the trade group that represents the U.S. Recording Industry. This is the Association that provides the Labels with all the Gold and Platinum Levels of Certifications for Albums, Singles, Ringtones and other Music Products.

Some confusion often arises (because of the misunderstandings among many of the Fans) on the obvious difference in the RIAA Certifications and the weekly Soundscan Sales Numbers. Here is an explanation of the meaning of the RIAA Certifications and the Soundscan Sales Reports:

Labels submit their proof of shipments to the Music Industry’s Retail Outlets for each Gold or Platinum Level Certification (such as Platinum, 2x Platinum and so forth). RIAA then verifies that said Retail Shipments (Purchases) meet the qualification for the Certification Level. Thus, the RIAA Certifications only mean that Retail Outlets (not the Consumers) have “bought” the Product. One must presume that Retail Outlets will (at some point) sell those items.

Soundscan Numbers are the actual reported Sales to Consumers by the Retail Outlets. These include both the purchases of physical CDs and Digital Downloads. Hence, with the obvious exception of Digital Downloads, the Numbers on the Soundscan Sales Reports will often be somewhat different than a RIAA Certification Level – behind at 1st and ahead later or until shipments to Retail Outlets (Purchases) reach the next RIAA Certification Level.

The RIAA Certification of Digital Download Sales will reflect the Soundscan Sales Report; however, the Certification generally trails actual Sales by a week or more, since RIAA only Certifies something when applied for by the Label and after the verification process. Such is presently the case with Carrie’s “All-American Girl” Single, which sold more than 500,000 Units (the qualification for Gold, literally all being Digital Downloads) over 2 weeks ago but nobody has made any statements on whether the Certification has been applied for yet.

It pretty much means that RIAA certifies you platinum not on the number of fan bought albums but on store bought albums. Because Stores have to buy them first and they buy as many as they think they can sell kinda make more sense?

yeah so like you can be double platinum and have only actually sold 1.2 million as long as the stores buy them they've been purchased.
